Gages

So, I picked up a 312-8 a while ago mainly for the steel wheel weights. The carb was in a bucket and PTO missing.

Cleaned the carb and put it back on, thankfully all the pieces were there, and it runs like a top!

But it has a "quirk" I think.

It's an early 312 with a Kohler instead of a Magnum, maybe 84/85?

Someone put Sunpro voltmeter in the dash which doesn't appear to be working. I think it should be an amp meter like the other machines I have.

I know this is kind of rambling...

You guys think it's worth swapping the Volt gage to an AMP gage?

it's kinda dirty right now, it's my snowplow machine and I haven't cleaned it up yet

I personally prefer a voltmeter over an ammeter but they certainly both have their place.

@squonk could explain the difference between the two better than me.

The 300 series including yours never had an amp meter. If the hour meter works your volt meter should be working, if neither one is working you have a blown fuse.

Likely the volt meter was designed to be inside a car not exposed to the elements like it would be in a tractor.

This likely caused it to fail, I did the same thing a few years ago because the regular automotive gauge fit and worked for a while.

If you get a volt meter from a tractor that is more robust it should then be fine.

They are readily available on ebay.

I use marine-grade voltmeters. Only a bit more expensive than the cheapest ones and well-sealed against weather.

Not much of a gauge watcher, I like a fuel gauge and hour meter.

If it has and oil filter I write the installed hours on it and the air filter too.

If it is slow or no start I check the charging system and or battery.
