42" SD spindles and blades

Recommended Posts

HalfpipeKermit

Hello, just starting my Wheel Horse journey and had a couple questions to get me up and running ASAP. Just picked up my first Horse, a '87 414-8 came with a 42" SD deck. It has been somewhat restored/repaired. I have not ordered the blades for it yet, as I had a question about the spindles. I noticed the one was different in the threads than the others, and worried about the difference allowing slop in the figment and causing vibration. Any insight on that is appreciated, if its no worries or something needs to be swapped out. Also attached is a photo of me and my son! He loves our evening rides. Thanks for looking.

Can’t help you out on the spindle question but I just wanted to say that’s a pretty nice looking 42” deck there.  Has the underside been treated with POR 15?

I have been working on a 42” as well. Just traded spindles from another deck into the one I’m going to use. None of the ones I have look as good as what you have there.
Start ‘em young and raise em right!

I think that one spindle missing the threads may have been ran with a loose nut and the blade spun on it wearing the threads away.

While it will work as is I would likely replace the shaft in the spindle as the blade will likely never sit centered and may vibrate.

You could just put well balanced blades on it and see if it runs smooth and go from there.

The spindle shaft on the far right is toast. At one time the blade that was on it it was loose and was slipping causing it to wear the shaft away.

Before you toss that spindle, I have replaced the thin washer #920257 on the top of the blade with a thick one allowing the blade to center on the shaft.

The most obvious thing is to make sure the blade is tight. Torque spec circled in red. New nuts are available and are advised.

One other thing I do is replace the grade 8, 5/8 lock washer circled in blue #920087, helps keep tension between pulley and spindle.
