1973,42"cut,12hp,hydro, model???????

Recommended Posts

I have a 1973 C120 (1 0460-8) 42" mower, 12hp, automatic.  The "pull handle" will move the mower up etc. BUT won't lock into place. PINTA! I've had it apart but don't see a problem. Any suggestions?  Many thanks, TJN

Hey guys, if you get a chance, please review "C160 questions" (on this forum, "wheelhourse Tractors")by Easton Rich, March24, pg 1, plate#22. I have a 1973 WH, that looks just like the one pictured except it's 12hp and hydro. I catch hell every time I relate the model #, ie. C120, OR ( the factory tag says) , 1 0460-8.  What really is correct?  Thanks a bunch, TJN

The 8 on the end of the model number is not used but subtract 5 from the 8 = 3 = 1973. The no-name model year.

:text-welcomewave:

1973 predates the "Letter series" like A,B,C, and D tractors by one year.

Your tractor model is simply stated by the year, HP,  & transmission.

So you'd have a

" 73 12 Automatic  "

Or

" 73 12 Hydro "

depending what the label says on the side of the steering tower.

It's the same as a 1974 C120 Automatic otherwise. Just different nomenclature.

Can you please post pics of the side of your tractor where the lift handle is?

Likely I've got parts to fix that.

Hey guys, ebinmaine, 953nut,gwest_ca,wallfish,  MANY THANKS! Thanks to you all I finally know what I have! It's bothered me since I purchased it in 1973!  Now that all of the brains are gathered, please help with another issue. I replaced the drive belt with a 5/8"x84" unit.  Now the damn thing is so tight, that the idler pulley is all the way Up as is the brake handle that it's connected to! I measured the outside DIAMETER (old belt) and got 851/8". The old one is oem (believe it or not), so it undoubtedly stretched a little. The Wheelhorse table called for the 84" belt, watcha all think? (no luck)..... TJN

Taking a quick poke around Redsquare I believe

5/8 x 84" is the correct size.

But..

That doesn't mean the belt is sized right or something's not been changed along the way.

Can you post a measurement and pics of the belt AND the belt idler pulley?

It's fairly easy. Varies by electronic device and brand.

I'm not the best to be telling you,  being only functional enough to (barely) keep myself outta trouble.

On the main Redsquare page,  scroll down to "Finding your way around..."

There's a BUNCH of helpful information on many subjects under that heading.

WAY too many possibilities to list. Let us know what device(s) you are using and your level of tech expertise.

Easiest way to explain it,

If you're using a phone

Take your picture, it should go wherever you keep your pictures on the phone

When you post your reply in a topic, near the bottom left, you'll see a paper clip and in red,  tap,  where it says "click to choose files"

It should take you to where you keep your pictures.

Choose the picture you want to post.

It should start downloading

and once it's done doing that

you should be able to add it to your reply

That's basically it, but, all phones are different.

Look at the elevation differences between the tension pulley (up with the new belt, down without).  I cut the damn belt off, it measures +/- 835/8", about 4" short!  (measured required length by holding the belt in place and measuring the void between the ends.)  Nothing I've seen calls for a +/-87"-88" belt. Tom.     P. S. old belt measured 851/8", no doubt stretched bit.

What brand and type new belt did you buy?

And how was it routed after installation?

I've installed more than one incorrectly and had to fix my error.

This image is a late 70s C121 we just built. It's a little dark but the only pic I have handy.

Note the location of the idler OVER the belt and note the location of the belt routing near the middle.

This tractor is slightly different from your own.. But the point is that your belt guides need to be properly oriented with the belt.

The guides in this pic are on the steering tower whereas yours MAY be on the belt guard.

Ebinmaine, the belts (84"&85") are "USA/oem, 3 year warranty" . Should arrive in about a week. The belt will be routed around the trans and electric clutch pulleys, also UNDER the idler pulley as the former factory pulley did.  That pulley is used to tighten the belt when moving (handle down) and as an "emergency" brake when pulled up. All of the sources that I've seen recommend an 84" belt, so I'm repurchasing same AGAIN. I'm also purchasing an 85" belt as insurance. One or both may be returned in favor of probably an 86" belt. As previously stated the factory belt (51 years old) measured 851/8", and surely was stretched a bit.  The newly ordered belts are also Kevlar based. I hope that this answers your questions. Tom

Hey @TJN It looks like the guys are helping you out how you need, and even teaching you ‘puter stuff too!  If you begin their handle with the “at” sign like your name is in this post, it’ll notify who you are speaking at.  :handgestures-thumbupright:

@Pullstart vs Pullstart, etc.

I then poke your name and it ads a "mention".

That's how it comes up highlighted. Blue on my phone.
