Curious - What's PA's rules on that? Consider it like a car hit?

Yes, illegal to possess or dispatch without written permission.

WHX??

No chance of saving any meat Ed?

Same thing happened to me year before last. Injured buck on the side of the road. I dispatched it with my concealed carry piece and called in for a road kill tag. When the cop got there I inadvertently let it out I finished it never giving a thought that it's illegal to discharge a gun within 50 ft of a roadway. He just smiled and said he didn't hear that and bedsides I'm not a game warden.

On my way up nort and just happened to be passing by a processor that does them for food pantries. That's kinda a big thing here. I think the state pays them.

It's dicey here in PA. Sometimes you get the OK without a second thought, sometimes they want to slap you in irons and suspend your hunting license for 10 years just for asking.

I remember once, about 20-25 years ago my dad and I came on a similar situation, guy came around a corner in his Grand Marq and plowed into a deer, broke it's front legs, and it couldn't get out of the road, a few weeks before the season started. Dad was considering dispatching it when an off-duty LEO pulled up, radioed it in, then we waited for an on-duty ociffer to show up, who then put 2 whole clips from his service weapon into the poor animal's head without killing it. Then they radioed in (only because they were out of ammo) and got the OK for dad to use the 30-30.

Then they allowed us to take it to "donate to a non-profit". We took it home, butchered it ourselves, and gave the meat to the pastor.

Archery deer season opened yesterday.

In my tree for two hours before heading for the Steam-O-Rama.

1 fox

1 groundhog

5 graytails

6 doe

Not bad for the first 2 hours.

Ya know the older I get the more I just enjoy sitting & watching and observing the critters.

Looks like just starting to get some fall colors.

@Ed Kennell Why don't come down and sit in my backyard with that cross bow, I got a ground hog that needs to go. Living in the city limits, lead is not allowed. Been thinking that I need a crossbow for Christmas so Mr. hog can go bye bye.

I headed up to the farm this morning to scout a spot for my son to hunt from. The spot I had in mind is a no-go, the brush is still too thick.

But a big walnut tree broke in two on the edge of the field and the top part is sitting tented at the edge of a corn field, just a few yards from a active game trail. Based on tracks I'd say at least 4 different deer have moved through there since the rain stopped.

So I pulled some other downed limbs around and built a nice little ground blind for us.

Better to buy a live trap Jimmy.   Much cheaper and easier to set.  Those whistle pigs luv watermelon.

Then when you get him you can deliver him to a bad neighbors yard.

In Michigan relocation of groundhog is illegal... can shoot them or in areas where no guns allowed can kill them with traps if nuisance...

Probably also illegal here Jim,    but knowing @elcamino/wheelhorses relationship with the @squonk,  I thought Jim may want to dump it in Mikes back yad.   :confusion-shrug:

Much better to bread and pan-fry the back legs and put the rest of the critter in the trash.

I was thinking of BBQ the hog and shipping it to him for Christmas. Would not skin or cook it , just covered it in sauce. Sir Skunky would like it.

You ever try to skin a groundhog?

You can pull the skin off the rear legs. The hide as a whole is so thin that even an attempt to gut will cause the rest of the animal to fall apart.

In fact most of the ones I shoot you can see through the abdominal wall if the lighting is right.

Plenty of doe, but no shooter bucks...yet.      I see 6-12 doe every day.     Saw one small 5 point and one spike.

We have yet to see one hunting. I did almost hit one on the way to the farm this morning though.

We watched two squirrels build a leaf nest for about an hour this morning while also watching no deer come by.

On my bathroom break I did find a land mine that said one was there possibly only half an hour before we got there.
