Has anyone put a Vanguard in a 300 series?

Ive seen them in a few different models, my M12S will eventually need to be replaced, ive found a good running electric start 16hp Vanguard, 1" shaft which I can sleeve to 1⅛ for the pulley.  Exhaust I can figure out, even if I have to run dual stacks, but...will it clear the hood with the oil filter housing up front, is the crank height the same?

I did one a few years ago in a 416-8.  I used an engine plate from a gt1100 which adapted the engine bolt pattern and gave the correct crankshaft height. Used a engine pulley from a c-85 which had a 1" crank, an easy swap that you'll be very pleased with!

An 18 Vanguard in a C-120, and a 16 Vanguard in a 312-8.

The back side of the PTO hole is the center line of the crank shaft. I raised the engine mount plate 3/4".

I think I used a 3/16" spacer to get the pulley away from the engine.

So, raise the engine 3/4" and space the pulley out 3/16", that's not terrible

I wasn't happy with how close the pulley was to the engine. I frist used a hydro pulley on my 312-8, it was too fast with the 25" tires  So I changed iy back to the stock pulley. I had to put a spacer on the C-120 as the PTO would push the pulley back.

I wont be running any attachments or a pto, just using a dirt blade

My only suggestion is to use a good quality 1-2psi electric fuel pump. All of my Vanguards developed pulse pump problems (say that really fast five times ), and it mimicks carb issues. Supposedly a known issue with the oil pan gasket. Head gaskets have some very thin spots too, so definitely inspect them when setting it up.

Never had another problem after losing the pulse fuel pumps. Stay away from cheap gaskets too.
