Trouble finding correct parts.

So last fall I got this Dynamark riding mower for free. Engine ran but when you stepped on the clutch/brake it wouldn't disengage. Looking at it I noticed it was a new drive belt. I figured PO got the wrong belt so I looked up what I thought would be the correct belt and ordered it. When it came I removed the belt that was on it and it looked to be the exact same size as the new one. Put new one on and same thing. That was an 82 inch belt. So I looked again and saw that a similar model had an 85 inch belt so I ordered one of those..... close but no cigar ! Now I ordered an 86 inch and are waiting for it. In the mean time I noticed water had gotten into the gas tank. The gas cap was the style with a gage but the bubble is busted off. Since the cap goes through the hood on top water leaks in. I need a new cap but having the same issues finding correct one. I don't need one with a gauge just one the screws on tight. Any help works be appreciated as I am finding multiple part numbers.

Isn't Dynamark an AYP brand like Craftsman & Murray?? You may wish to search there...

Yes it is. I believe Murray and Noma. But like I said, the more I search the more different numbers I see.

I will say I measured the inside diameter of the hole in the tank and it wad 1-13/16. Hard to measure the diameter including the threads or the inside diameter of the cap.

This is one reason I buy all my belts at TSC.     Keep the one that fits and return all the belts that don't fit.

@squonk mines more of the Yugo model. Not a DeLorean.  If I that one I'd keep it !

I use the universal caps from Home Depot for my Horses.  Will one of those fit?

I'll see if I can get a better measurement.  Maybe borrow some micrometers. Is the threading universal?

Seems to be.  Fits the Horses without issues.

I had the same situation when I first brought my C-195 home.  Cruddy gas tank, cap without the clear lens.  Figuring all Wheel Horse plastic tanks have the same thread, I ordered a cap for a C520.  The thread on the new cap is not the same as the original cap.  The new cap gets into a bind at about 3/4 turn.  The C-195 lives inside now, so I am calling it good enough for now.

I don't remember who it was on the forum, but their solution was to glue a new lens onto the cap.  I'm going to try that when I find a suitable lens.

Yeah I am not looking to repair this one. I'm looking for a new one. My gripe is with getting different sizes when using part numbers off manuals.

Dynamarks didn't get too fancy. There's probably 20 different brands that were the exact same thing except for decals. Noma, Monte Carlo ect. They even had them in Europe under the Westwood brand.  They were sold by Ames, W.G. Grants, and mom and pop hardware stores. The junk yards were full of them about 25 years ago. Trouble is they were all scrapped. You could try a Lowes or a good hardware store that stocks mower parts and maybe find a cap that fits.

Could try these guys. They have been around a long time

I just stopped at Ace Hardware and got a simple metal cap. Not exactly sure how it's going to keep water out being that the vent holes are on top of the cap and the cap goes through the hood. Guess they are made to be kept inside. Too bad for the Dynamark that my garage is full of Wheel Horses. The 3rd drive belt should be delivered tomorrow. Hopefully 3x's a charm !

Well an update if anyone cares. I got a v belt on that seems to work. It is 86 inches long. The manual that I found online called for an 82 inch belt. I got a gas cap that fits. The manuals replacement cap called for a 2.25 inch cap. The one that I got that fits is a 1.5 inch cap. It's puzzling because it is all original. The pullies and the tank had not been changed. The part numbers I have been looking up have been coming from a pretty popular online small engine parts company. Today I'm putting new tubes in the front tires. Then some clean up and oil change and send it down the road. All said and done I'll have 60 bucks into it. Oh one more thing. I do have the deck for it but it is missing the front deck hanger. In the manual the part is not even listed. It's not on the deck diagram or the body diagram.  I know it's missing because I tried mounting it and in videos and photos of same tractor I can see it in middle of front axle.

So I now own a black hood. I went to the dark side...... kinda.

A little paint , duct tape , wax, and elbow grease goes along way.

The last two weeks we have been splitting time between our new home in VA, and finishing the little to-do projects before going on the market with our MD house. Juno has been helping me navigate the drive! It must be the breed as she stood by my shoulder for looking out the windshield most of the way for the 181 mile trip. Mrs. Sailor has to drive by herself.

Whittling the collection of tractors has been an interesting exercise. Different scenarios of equipment needed depended on which house would be our new one. Properties that we looked at ranged from 3-1/4 acres down to 0.4 acre, which is what we chose. After the choice was made in January, I have been divesting of the equipment that was used on our current wooded two acres. With only four trees compared to our grove of over 300, the log splitter, chainsaws, chipper/shredder, etc have been sold off. The primary tractors at the MD house have been my three 5xi. But I have decided that my three Black Hoods are better suited to the new house. Ironically the 1980 C-145 will become the primary mower at the new house - and the 1998 518xi will move on to another owner. The C-145 will receive a rebuilt engine and general refurbishment. In the meantime one of the other two Black Hoods will temporarily take over.

New member ...and another old-Iron guy here...with my 1st Wheel Horse tractor.

I was looking for something mainly for pulling an old aluminum boat (18' starcraft) around the property.

Capability to mow and haul yard waste would be a bonus.

      2 weeks ago, a C85 showed-up on CL for a song.

He couldn't start it for me and it didn't take me long to figure out why...

This will be a running thread / rolling-restoration as I bring her back to her original, Black-Hood glory!

(DISCLAIMER: I'm an engine-wrencher ...I have the tendency to leave my foot off of the project's gas when the engine starts drinking it!)

Can any one tell me what this is, other than just a Wheel Horse? The identification badging is missing, unless I am missing where it may be. The engine is a 14 horse Kohler, it is a hydro (both drive and deck lift), but other than that I am not sure about year/ model/ type of hydro drive/ if the hydro drive is one I can tap into for other hydraulic attachments such as lifts (3 point), etc...
Thank you in advance to all you WH guru's,
      Darren

P.S.-Is there a good way to get the steering wheel off without breaking it as I have another good one on the machine next to it.

Does anyone know the reasoning behind the black hoods like my C-161 shown below?  I like it because it was my dad's and looks a bit sinister but from the hood to the headlight bezel to the twin Briggs, I just wonder why they built it. It's been a great machine. Dad bought it when it was a couple years old from a neighbor and it has had nothing done to it but regular maintenance, a little touch up to the paint, and a fresh set of decals. Even the tires are still in good shape with only a few cracks.

I am re-doing my C-105 black Hood and I want to keep the hood from chipping the paint where it meet the dash.  As you probably know, all this had when it was stock was a this rubber pad on the top of the dash.  This helped protect the top of the dash, but didn't help the sides.

The rubber pad that this had is pretty much worn out, so I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions on what can be used to replace the top pad and how to treat the sides of the hood to protect it.

      Happy restoring to all!
