855 broken steering pinion

Recommended Posts

horseman with no horse

i picked up a nice little 855 puller for a decent price a little while ago and i noticed one of the teeth on the upper steering pinion is broken. A-Z has them for 15 bucks, no big deal right? well i have no idea how to get the pinion off the shaft. it looks like there is a roll pin holding it on but im not sure. any suggestions on how to get it apart?

Later models were welded on but even so, they are removable from the shafts. Both of those pieces, the gear and/or the fan gear. The weld would need to be ground off to knock it off the shaft then re-weled or drilled and pinned like the old ones

Once it is apart, check the sector gear for damage too. Would not be surprised to find heavy wear....

A-Z probably has the shaft with the welded gear.      If they don't, I have several.    Also, check the sector gear bolting flange for cracks .

That is part of the semi-annual oil change / maintainance schedule on my workers .....

When you guys talk about the sector bolting flange do you mean the bushing block the upper and lower shaft rests in? i know they are quite common to break. also i have the older roll pin style setup. i think the gear broke from the previous owner pulling with it. also the roll pin in the lower shaft is quite loose so i imagine that's the main reason it broke. i will still check the lower fan gear for wear though.

My 2 cents - drilling it should be the last option. Use a proper sized ROLL PIN PUNCH and a 2 to 3 pound hammer to remove the pin. Back up the shaft to sonething solid, like a wall.

IF you must drill it, use either a cobalt or carbide bit. Size depens on if it was ever replaced. Original SHOULD be 1/4". Common practice to go up one size to 5/16" if the hole in either the gear or shaft is wallowed out. Also a suitable fix for having the drill slip to the side trying to drill out an OE pin. With the pin removed, the gear will twist off

With the pin removed both the gear and shaft can be drilled larger, if needed, using a standard HSS bit.

Buy a decent set - not HF Tools. Mine were from Sears, bought a long time ago.

Others should chime in...

alright im gonna be pulling apart the shaft and the pinion soon. i noticed on my other 855 that the frame where the lower shaft is pretty wore out. sadly you cant just swap the bushing as it is the frame itself. im worried the shaft will wear through the frame. what can i do to prevent this?
