1991 Wheelhorse 520H Wiring Question

Recommended Posts

Got a 1991 Wheelhorse 520H that has been on my list to trouble shoot, so I thought I’d start tinkering tonight.  The issue, not charging.

Open the hood, take a look-see at the voltage regulator and two white wires appear to have come off the regulator and run in a black sleeve down into the engine.  Pics attached.

What are these wires for and presumably they came off the regulator?

Any idea if the connection of these wires to the VR is factory or someone’s rigging?  How would you know which white wire goes into which connector?  Is it possible this is the root cause of not charging?

Any sage advice is much appreciated!

I think the rest of the wire will be found in those 2 empty plugs. Remove the regulator, clean mounting surfaces and install new wire ends.

As @squonk noted.

The two whites go to the outer connectors on the voltage regulator (doesn’t matter which goes where).

It looks to me like the PO over-crimped the wires in new connectors, cutting some of the strands. You may find what you have left is too short to do a connection with sufficient slack.

I tend to solder tin the ends of wires like that to be sure the crimp doesn’t damage the wire. Then I use heat shrink (often two layers) to distribute any bending stress at the connection out along the wire.

My 520 has a 4th wire on one of the outside terminals.   It is the AC trigger wire to the tachometer.

It appears that the gray tachometer wire is attached.

Update - I dug under the hood of my 1988 520H (with 64 original hours…) and the two white wires are present on it and attach to the same lugs, so it is factory wiring, but pulled loose on the 1991 model.  My 1995 520H is wired somewhat differently than the ‘88 or ‘91.

Thanks for all the help!
