1987 Wheel horse has a voltage regulator?

Recommended Posts

supoc7

I have a 1987 wheel horse M10 461521 that has a voltage regulator. Now, all the schematics I've seen show no VR.

This is supposed to be an unregulated charging system. Now it's charging about 18 volts on a new fully charged battery.

The VR has 3 terminals H,B,S and the number on it is 1046. I would like to replace the VR but not sure with what. The

lights only work with the engine running. I don't want to ruin this battery with this high charging rate. Anybody have any ideas

on whats going on?

That spec engine came with a regulator mounted on the front of the blower shroud.  All the ones I have ever seen terminal are marked AC  B+  AC

With a regulated system lights should work all teh time.  Do you or get dimmer as the engine slows down as in shutting it off??

New knock offs are $12-20

Kohler has changed their display a bit, used to have a box around the item number if it was used in a spec #  Now they just only show in the description those parts in that spec. but this sure looks like you have a regulator

Toro lists the M10S-461521 3amp used on the following tractors 1987-1991. There is a mistake somewhere.

21-10K804 - 1987 - Wiring diagram shows 3amp unregulated charging system

21-12K805 - 1988 - Wiring diagram shows 3amp unregulated charging system

Conflicting info

It is possible the early 1988 310-8 model 21-10K805 used the 1987 3 amp unregulated charging system up to Kohler engine serial 1715900013 (1987 production)

It is possible the early 1989 310-8 model 21-10K806 used the 1987 3 amp unregulated charging system up to Kohler engine serial 1919902923 (1989 production)

21-10K806 - 1989 - Wiring diagram shows 15amp regulated charging system

31-10K801 - 1990 - Wiring diagram shows 15amp regulated charging system

31-10K802 - 1991 - Wiring diagram shows 15amp regulated charging system

Need a picture of the front of the magnum to see if there is a regulator mounted.  Kohler info may not be accurate either

I'm thinking the 461521 spec is not correct for 1989, 1990 and 1991

1992 and 1993 don't look correct either.

1987 310-8 model 21-10K804 - Using M10S-461521

1988 310-8 model 21-10K805 - Using M10S-461521

1989 310-8 model 21-10K806 - Using M10S-461521

1990 310-8 model 31-10K801 - Using M10S-461521

1991 310-8 model 31-10K802 Serial 1000001-1999999 - Using M10S-461521

1992 310-8 model 31-10K803 Serial 2000001-2999999 - Using M10S-46154 - Suspect this should be 461545

1993 310-8 model 73320 Serial 3900001-3999999 - Using M10S-46145 - Suspect this should be 461545

Kohler made spec numbers 461533 and 461545 for Wheel Horse

Copied this from service bulletin 301G

The 117254 shows up for 1990 and 1991 at Toro

I agree something is fishy here. Really need a picture of the front of the engine.

The regulator is not mounted on the engine. It's on the right side cowl just forward of the dash.

Well that isn't standard.  So now we have to wonder if you have a 15 amp stator or the three amp. Try to find the wires that come out from the engine and head toward the instrument panel.  There was back then a 3 prong connector.  Looking at the engine side there should be 3 wires One kills the ignition one, I believe yellow, power the lights.  There should be  a small lump in the 3rd wire hidden by the outer cover Slit the cover and see if there is diode in that third wire.  If there is start with step 2.

That is a part number for a Harley Davidson voltage regulator. My advice would be to abandon that unit in favor of a correct Kohler voltage regulator and follow the Wheel Horse wiring diagram.

More thinking...  If the engine has a 15 amp stator then there will still be three wires but two will be white and one (mag kill) dark Blue.  If it is a 3 amp the wires will be all different colors.

What I did was change the VR to the one that is on the wheel horse Z110 K804 diagram which is  part # 2575503 and all is well now. It's charging correctly. had to put new terminals on the wiring to match the VR. Pfrederi, Thanks for the diagram.

Thank you all for the help.

Assuming the front mount Wheel Horse generators were made by Generac, is there a source for parts for these units?
Been searching the web but parts for these older units seem scarce.
Would appreciate any help or direction I can get to keep this "old stuff" running.

Good morning, I have been a long time reader, but a first time poster.

I have a 1988 Wheel Horse 520HC Tractor.  Does not charge, and I have to assume that it is due to the fuse at the front of the engine being blown.  However if I replace the fuse that is located at the front of the engine, the wire at the voltage regulator will get hot, start to smoke as it melts the wires insulation.

I have not started testing anything yet, as I just have stumbled upon this issue and was wondering if anyone else has had the same style of problem and what kind of repair did you have to perform.

      Thanks.

      Hi,

I need to replace the voltage rectifier on a 520H.
      So I ordered the following replacement part: "New Rectifier Regulator for Onan P-Series Alternators 16 17 18 19 20HP Engines 20 Amp Rating 191-1748, 191-2106, 191-2208, 191-2227 by Crank-n-Charge"

This new rectifier has 3 male spade connectors, yet on the tractor I have voltage rectifier with 4 spade connectors.  I've attached a picture of the current rectifier.

Can I use this new rectifier and assume I can wire the white and grey wires together?

Or is this currently installed rectifier something special since it has 4 spade connectors and the two wires need to be independent of each other?

Thank you for helping me out.

      Regards,
      Kevin

How do you know which way to plug in the three prong wiring harnes that has two black wires on the out edges with one green wire in the center as it will plug in  in either direction.  There is no detent on the connector directing how to plug it in - it will go in in either direction.  Help 1968 Charger 12 Automatic Wheel Horse  george.stringer@frontier.com
