Brockport Bill 1,713 #1 Posted February 4 i have c175 hydro -- Eaton -- can someone tell me if the fill line measurement at bottom of Tranny stick is measured when the dip stick is casually lying into top of the tube.... or after plunger is forced down into the tube top??? The Dip Stick has a rubber plunger to seal at top of tube --- the oil level reading has notable different measurment at bottom of dip stick depending if the top of stick is forced into tube? gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,090 #2 Posted February 4 Does not answer your question From 1981 operator manual
wallfish 17,078 #3 Posted February 4 It kind of does answer it. Remove the dipstick which is assuming it's inserted because that's how you would normally use it. Replace the dipstick and check again would mean inserted back in. Add oil and replace again would be you're done so it's inserted 3
pfrederi 17,856 #4 Posted February 4 Kohler is the only one to have you not fully insert the dipstick when measuring

Curiously I have a Ariens walk behind snowblower with a tecumsuh engine and in the Manual they actually clarify if the dip stick should be all the way inserted or not to get accurate reading? But the WH manual printed in the above thread does not specifically answer my question?

Brockport Bill 1,713 #8 Posted February 4 ok..... I guess I will have to see if we get a consensus or take a vote since we have differing view points?
Darb1964 1,055 #9 Posted February 4 I've always interpreted it as fully inserted and that is how I've always done it.
Cody 276 #10 Posted February 4 I'm with wallfish on this, it's pretty clear they want you to re-insert the dipstick to check the level.
Racinbob 11,194 #11 Posted February 4 (edited) Per Kohler if it threaded just shoulder it and don't screw it in. Non threaded should be inserted fully. Same holds true for the tranny. Direct from the service manual: 3. Remove oil fill cap/dipstick; wipe oil off. Reinsert dipstick and push it all the way down into tube. Remove dipstick and check the level. 4. On engines with threaded type plug dipstick, shoulder plug on top of hole to observe level. Edited February 4 by Racinbob 2

rick 235 #13 Posted February 4 Don't confuse the Eaton hydro with a Tecumseh or Kohler engine. Bill clearly asked about an Eaton tranny, which is checked cold with the dipstick fully inserted. Don't start the engine, just pull the Eaton dipstick out, wipe it off and stick it all way in. Then pull the Eaton dipstick back out and check the level of the fluid on the stick. Add if needed and repeat, all the way in!

Handy Don 12,436 #15 Posted February 4 11 minutes ago, squonk said: And make sure the vent handle thingy is clear. Absolutely! The rubber “thingy” is there to secure the dipstick from rattling around, NOT to hermetically seal the transaxle (which MUST vent through the hollow dipstick handle for correct operation).
