Quieting a K series Nelson muffler

Recommended Posts

RED-Z06

I was clearing out a corner of the shop today and found an old RLV silencer i ran on my old Racing kart, i figured if it can flow a 200cc engine turning 8600 a K series shouldn't be a problem.  The Nelson muffler is fine but i catch a sharp "crack" on the exhaust note, its annoying when you mow for a couple hours.  I slid the rlv silencer (its a can with about 6 steel screens in it) on and it really takes the edge off the sound.  Id probably have to make a support arm to keep it from snapping the outlet off from vibration but i thought it was cool how it did effectively help.  I put it on my 27hp Vtwin and the difference there was even more pronounced.

Definitely takes a bit of the "blappy sharpies" off the sound doesn't it.

The tone is much lower for sure, it dulls it down.  Its kinda weird hearing the mechanical engine sounds over the exhaust

I would watch for muffler over-heat. Too much back pressure may affect your performance.

RLV silencer

That's a good point. Is that silencer a straight through design?

Supertrapp makes an industrial spark arrestor muffler where you assemble with adapters, diffuser discs and resonator if needed. The number of diffuser discs is based HP and back pressure.

Basically? Theres about 4 or 5 screens inside. They use this design on 420cc ohv engines that turn 9500 to 10,000 rpms, its really not restrictive, it takes the edge off
