People who spraybomb tractors

You ever see a tractor, WH or otherwise that the seller has so badly spray bombed that you dont buy it solely on the amount of additional work required to clean it up and not look terrible?  Like not just how bad it looks, just the sheer laziness to paint the gauges, dash, tires, steering wheel, lights, wiring...etc?

... and they usually have the audacity to tell you that a "restoration" on it has begun... !!  They should be banned from the spray paint aisle at Walmart!

That does irk me to no end  - as a former painter, it's all about the preparation, THEN the presentation.

To me it's just paint. Nothing that I can't fix. Price adjustment may be required though.

Like many of us, we've seen a few come into our Workshop that were just ridiculously undone overdone redone not done should have been done.

 

I don't remember ever not buying one on purpose because it looked terrible or whatever. But as Dan says above, we definitely accounted for it in the price.

I never met a Wheel Horse I didn't like.

Paint would be on of my least concerns when purchasing one. LOL my only deal maker or breaker is the price.

It just adds hours to it, tedious work.  Some of it cant always be removed without damage. I saw a D180 today on marketplace that you can tell they just bombed it red, on the tires, dash, controls, headlights, wiring...0 masking, and they didnt paint near the edges of anything directly...

I agree with everything said…I’ll add…

 

I spray bombed my 1994 520H and my 1984 Work Horse GT-1600…

 

I put a little effort into them.

 

Are they perfect ?    No

Could I have done better ?     Maybe

Was I excessively lazy ?     No

Am I happy with the results ?     Yes

 

And I do appreciate a quality spray gun paint job…

Yep lol I remember when there was a blue suburban for sale near me and he painted the rims white… and both sides of the tires too I think you know the one I’m talking about and I think I sent it to @Pullstart too

Did you use any masking tape, or make any attempt to control overspray?

Yes sir I did mask , but the only place I needed to was the Satin Black on the front grilles. Everything else was painted separately ( tractor disassembled and reassembled )

 

My shop floor caught quite a bit of overspray !

Thats not spray bombing, you actually made effort to isolate the parts and different colors.  Spray bombing would be hosing it off, spraying the whole tractor 1 color freestyle.  Yours looks really nice.

 

Imagine spray bombing as hiding behing a bench...stabbing cans of paint and tossing them grenade style at the tractor🤣

Last one had 4 or 5 coats of paint on it. 

Original

Light Blue Automotive Paint

Dark Blue Automotive Paint

And I think 2 Coats of Brushed/Rolled on Rustoleum Red Paint. (on everything, everything) 

 

I used stripper on it and it took off the red fairly easy. The blue paint, I would say, was done nicely. It took a couple applications to remove. Interesting.

Unfortunately certain people think it's necessary to paint tractors, equipment, snowblowers with a cheap spray paint coat   Mostly they are flippers who think they will get more money for it.  Sadly too these people seem real proud of their work thinking they got special skills.

OK I really don't care about how my horses look.  They are tractors they are supposed to WORK.  Most of mine are dirty dusty and have poor paint jobs...but they start and do what they are supposed to.  I do not like painting will not waste the time needed to do it super nice.  I paint for corrosion control.  Mechanicals are a different story .. I want them work well and last so I will spend time on that.

 

My L-107 that father bought in 1967 got a quick rattle can job in the later 90s.  I rarely wash her (water and metal = rust not to mention what happens to electrical stuff).  She starts and is still used most every day...and in 57 year I doubt she has spent 5 days outside overnight and certainly not when it was raining.

 

There is a line in the Dirty Dozen  Very pretty Colonel, very pretty, but can they fight

 

Mine aren't pretty but the do what they are supposed to.

Would you say Rustoleum spray bomb is cheap or do you mean taking no time to prep and pay no attention to detail.

Comparing a spray can job, even a good one is cheap compared to a good spray gun paint job.

Just my interpretation…
