c-series don 8,808 #1 Posted January 25 I want to order new keys for the hubs/axles in my 418-8. I found them at McMaster-Carr, have to buy ten but I only need two, whatever! I’ll have spares! My question is should I order carbon or alloy steel? Which one is better for this application? Thx in advance for any help.
squonk 41,291 #2 Posted January 25 I would think Alloy steel but someone smarter than me will be along shortly to prove otherwise!

JoeM 7,874 #4 Posted January 25 kind of sitting here thinking. I think WH just used a carbon steel key as OE The hub and axle are what I consider soft or mild steel material. If you get any movement you want the key to wear first. I would go with a regular key. Just make sure the bore in the hub is tight and there is not a lot wear on the axle. If so, Loctite quick metal works well to help take up some space.
Ed Kennell 38,602 #5 Posted January 25 I suspect it really doesn't matter. I have never seen a key with much damage. Even when the axle and hub slots have been destroyed. Doesn't appear the key is designed to be a safety or shear device.
Roger R 448 #6 Posted January 25 Softer keys are better I would think. Much easier and cheaper to replace keys than axles or hubs. I have had several keys show damage on miscellaneous equipment besides a Wheel Horse, with little or no damage to drive or driven components
