dkg520 510 #1 Posted January 10 (edited) The transmission on my 1962 702 has started leaking in these two spots. Am I correct in thinking that these are two bearings that need to be replaced? And if so once I split the case open what do I need to do to remove the old bearings and install the new ones? This will be the first time I have split open a transmission and can use any advise. Looks like the shell endcaps are corroded - yes, the transmission should be split to service.My concern is that there may be water inside the unit - caps are being eaten up from inside..... Look at Lowell's site - he carries these bearings and seals. I recall 4 levels of parts - from basic to complete overhaul. DO take the time to split the case, clean & inspect all the innards to see the extent of what needs attention to generate a shopping list. DO look at the video found in the Forum heading Instructional Videos / Transmissions, dealing with rebuilding a 3 speed. Good info there, thanks to @stevasaurus. Be prepared to get dirty and spend a fair amount of cash to get the job done right...... Is the hitch pin out or rusted in place?? There are postings about that too. Drain the old fluid - is it milky white / tan?? You may wish to flush it prior to opening it up - there are postings for that too. stevasaurus 22,884 #3 Posted January 10 (edited) Those are cap seals, the bearings may be OK. Drain the trans and let's see what comes out. This might be a cheap fix, depends and what is inside. I would not order anything untill I opened it and had a cnance to see what you got. You can get all that you need from Lowell in a couple of days. Those are not the bearings, the bearings are on the inside of the case. Watch both of these videos. The 1st one is the 702 with pictures. The 2nd is a 4 speed, but it is the same (basically) inside. Those are capped bearings. They are both the seal and bearing. They tap out from the inside. I had a "Mini-stroke" like last October...I'm OK, but I need to be extra careful when I type anything. rmaynard 15,642 #6 Posted January 11 Those may be fine and your leak may be coming from the brake shaft seal just above them. Clean everything thoroughly and check again closely for where the oil is coming from. I have not rebuilt near as many of these transmissions as others have, but I have never found a leak at those two seals. squonk 41,474 #7 Posted January 11 What's the blue goo in the pic? looks like someone had splooged some RTV or something over the bearing cap to seal it at some time? It would take quite a bit for rust to create a pinhole in the end of the cap but not impossible. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
dkg520 510 #8 Posted January 11 Yes it looked like someone attempted to stop the leak with some type of sealant at one time. Also I did change out the brake shaft seal. The leak is definitely coming from the end caps. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
