Wiring K181 Regulator, different than others

Recommended Posts

RED-Z06

I know theres 3 terminals, one is 12v battery feed, one is Field coil to the generator...and it grounds to the mount...with the 3rd terminal being an accessory feed.

My regulator has the 3 terminals, unmarked...the only terminal with a wire on it appears to bridge across the bottom to the ground.  Then theres a 4th terminal under the reg with a wire, i dont know what it does.

The 4th terminal has me confused, and the terminal that seems to connect by a little wire covered pipe to ground.

Terminal on the bottom goes to the A terminal on the Genny.  (It was a Kohler part number doesn't show on WH wire diagrams)

What does that A do?  Excite the generator when power is applied for starying?

Cranking power comes from the ignition switch directly to the Genny A terminal.  When running the A terminal feeds electricity to the regulator and through it to the battery.  The amount generated is controlled by the regulator varying the field ground.

So i still need to add a Battery wire off the center terminal?

Not to get it to start. Center term is charge to the battery. If you take a set of jumper cables and connect from a battery to ground and A with no regulator the starter will spin. Wont charge but will spin.

Those are the best diagrams Richard. :bow-yellow:

Huh...then the shop that wired my 702 in 2003 did it wrong and that's likely why it never charged, they had a wire from F to F on gen, and 12v to Bat on Reg only.

Follow that diagram Dick posted and it will be wired correctly. It shows all 4 terminals for the regulator.

Remember to clean the contacts on the new ignition points before installation.          :twocents-02cents:

There are also point contacts inside of the regulator. They don't seem to oxidize as fast as ignition points do for some reason but I've needed to clean some for the regulator to work.
