moe1965 752 #1 Posted January 8, 2024 I'm trying to find a video or instructions on how to replace the valve guides. Can they just be driven out with a punch or special tool and new ones put in the same way. Also can this be performed by not totally removing the crank and piston etc. thanks in advance
ri702bill 8,962 #2 Posted January 8, 2024 Check the procedure in the Kohler engine manual - follow it UNLESS someone else chimes in with a "Backyard" fix.... that looks reasonable.....
WHX?? 50,698 #3 Posted January 8, 2024 It's a procedure best done in a machine shop IMHO. The degree of accuracy required not to mention special tools that the average hobbyist doesn't have. Often the block needs to be heated or the guides cooled for proper press fit. After installing the guides will need to be reamed to proper size so it should be a bare block for cleaning. Not to say it can't be done DIY but not by this cat. 1

Curious, what problem or condition was discovered that indicates new valve guides are the fix? 1
squonk 42,513 #5 Posted January 9, 2024 Worn guides = oil consumption and accelerated valve face and seat wear. I would bet a high percentage of the old Kohlers still running that haven't been at a machine shop in there lives really could benefit from new guides. The don't wear as fast as rocker arm actuated valves but they do wear.
moe1965 752 #6 Posted January 9, 2024 Smokes at throttle up but not at idle or running full throttle. I removed the engine took the piston out to have a look see. No visible scoring no sign of piston slapping someone bored it .010 over and I did see the breather assemble plate with the little drain hole was in upside down. I wiggled the valve and they appear to be a bit sloppy. I didn't remove them and check them with a gauge. A friend of mine who has a machine shop is coming over to check my bore for me I'm hoping to get away with just honing and new piston rings I did see that there was some leakage on the head gasket as well I will have to check that to see if it is flat
WHX?? 50,698 #7 Posted January 9, 2024 If the piston top & chamber are clean chances are the rings are bad... oil washed. A nice carbon build up is actually good.
moe1965 752 #8 Posted January 10, 2024 Chamber looks pretty clean compared to others that I have seen. I'm hoping to get away with just doing a ring replacement. Measurements will tell me more. Thanks all for input
