Recently got hold of a 656 it's has a "newer" 61/2 Briggs on it I don't believe that's right any ideas about that

You are correct. A 656 would have had a Tecumseh 6 hp

I don't imagine they're rare as hen's teeth but I've not tried to look for one for quite a while. 

 

Is there a specific reason you would look for a Tecumseh?

Does the tractor have a specific type of value to you?

 

I have nothing particular against Tecumseh but unless you're looking to duplicate that engine for collector value, you are likely better off sticking with the Briggs that's on there already.

I agree…if the Briggs is a good runner I would keep it on the machine.

Thank you for your help and input the Briggs is fine but they had to modify the hood a little that's why

The tractor it self is a great worker. Good in tight spaces. But the HH60 engine can be finakey. From my experience with a 606 656 607 657 I had them all it is in the carbs if you have the original carb hang on to it carefully rebuild it. Also Teckys like to run more often than other brands of engines. Enjoy the ride.

You could take that one either way. 

All the manufacturers of engines had some good, some less so. 

The Tecumseh in the 60s had a carb that was occasionally tough to get along with as noted above by Gary. 

However  - many many thousands of then ran perfectly fine for decades without ever being touched. 

 

If you're interested in true originality you could hunt down a Tecumseh. IMHO it wouldn't be very practical. 

You could also post some pics of the Briggs and Stratton that's in there now. Perhaps you could mount it differently or move a component to clear the hood. 

 

Another option for consideration is to find a Kohler K-series small block (8 HP or less) that would essentially make your tractor into a copy of one of its bigger siblings. An 856.  

 

They're a great worker with lots of options. Most importantly,  use it. That's what they were intended for.

      Info needed.
      Going to put a oil drain on this engine next oil change and don't really know what I need to start. Trying to get parts ready before time.
      I don't know what size the existing plug is ( see photo ) 3/8" 1/4" ? Getting tired of taking the deck down every time I change oil. Any input welcome.

      Replacing the drive belt on my 252-h. Anyone know the torque specification for the center screw when I put this pto clutch back on? I know it was on there tight it took a minute for the impact to break it loose. Thanks!

      my magnum 12 kohler all of a sudden is blowing oil out of the carb. if rings are bad should oil be blowing out of the muffler.thanks for any help brent

      Hey all. I have a Electro 12 with a factory belly blade. It runs* and drives. I had used it to grade my driveway the last 6 yrs. Having moved I'm looking at my options on storing it or selling it. Frankly I have no idea what it is worth. I watched "ISaveTractors" video on 5 things to do with a new to you wheel horse/12hp kohler. (When i got it 6yrs ago) And went thru and did the adjustments and replaced the parts mentioned. It has been a good strong tractor for me until around July of this year. (2023)
      *Around July it started dying after running 20-30min. I replaced the carb (Chinese Amazon purchase) with one from isavetractors web site. That seemed to help it idle smoother(the old carbs jets wouldnt adjust), but it still dies at around 20-30min.
      So I've got 2 questions. 
      1. What is it worth? (As-Is) and
      2. What do I need to do to fix it?

      I am looking for a replacement Kohler for a 1980 c165,it is cradle mounted.
      Will a standard mount Kohler work, if I remove the cradle?
       I am located in Massachusetts
