Lane Ranger 10,991 #1 Posted January 4 I have rebuilt several RJs over the years and been in many three piece transmissions for rebuild. New bearings, seals etc. but I have a quest about the RJ three piece transmission that I do not know the answer to about its development. The original three piece transmission for the RJs on the 1958 tractors had an 8 tooth brake shaft gear on the upper shaft to mesh with the rear differential. The second version had a stinger 14 tooth gear face on the upper shaft with a revised rear differential. Does anyone know the approximate date that Wheel Horse changed this 8 tooth to 14 tooth gear and differential assembly in the RJ transmissions?? I don’t believe the Manual for Rebuilding these mentioned a date but it does note the two different gears. I have both types and just wondered as I was looking at the date codes on some of my transmissions. These old brake gears are getting to be hard to find in good , useable condition for 3 piece transmission rebuilds.

gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,090 #4 Posted January 4 Prior to June 1961 but looks like possibly mid 1958? It is in the RJ-58 recorded serial numbers.
Achto 27,743 #5 Posted January 4 My '60 Suburban 400 had the 8 tooth gear in it. It failed on me & has since been replaced with the 14 tooth. Old ones with damage. Replaced with these. \
stevasaurus 22,842 #6 Posted January 4 There were like 3 changes that are part of the evolution of the #5003 and #5010 Wheel Horse transmissions. 1. The change that Lane is talking about. ie...the brake shaft (Mushroom Gear) and the differential housing. 2. The spline shaft for the fork gears and the spline shaft. 3. The left side transmission plate which changed to a needle bearing from a ball bearing. side note...they did come out with a differential that had a bolt on bull gear. (This fits the newer brake shaft) Looking at the material that Gwest entered. One of the down loads talks about Service Note #5 & #2 + #4. I sugest looking to find Service Note #5 to maybe get an answer for a date. @Achto 5010 trans in his 400 is most likely the work of a previous owner. The parts were still interchangeable in the 5010 and the 5003 transmissions, but I have never seen or heard of the older brake shaft and differential being in a 5010 from the factory. I suspect that Service Note #5 is your best bet for a date, but without that date, you will not know when they started using the newer differential and brake shaft from the factory, or a trans that got a re-build from the dealer. I would think that if you open a #5003 and it has the older brake shaft and differential, it is from the factory...for sure pre-casting date castings and casting dated. 1
