Brockport Bill 1,668 #1 Posted December 28, 2023 Wondering if anyone has any experience with this testing tool -- called Power Probe - ( see photo) ?? My grandson wanted it for Christmas so we got it for him and he was explaining to me its features -- I enjoy working on our horses but electrical has never been a knowledge area i developed very well but always looking to learn -- so grandson was telling me the comparisons to a multimeter and a couple other features for checking circuits etc - - Any thought or insights? thanks. squonk 41,171 #2 Posted December 28, 2023 It's kind of like a digital test light with the ability to apply power or ground to a circuit. Example. Your headlights don't work. You probe the light and apply power with a push of a button and the light comes on. That tells you the bulb and ground is good. It's a handy tool where you don't have to have a long jumper that's hot from the battery dangling all over as you work with the potential of shorting out. I've also thought about getting one. I did buy a digital test light from Eastwood. When you ground the cable and touch a circuit the light lights up red and a digital readout tells you the voltage found. Unlike a traditional light that will light up with only 6 volts. If you attach the lead to battery positive you can check for grounds and it will light up in green and give you a voltage reading telling you how much voltage you are losing through the ground. Brockport Bill 1,668 #3 Posted December 28, 2023 Squonk -- ah ha - - love learning this stuff - - now if i can just remember it -- haha -- as you stated is what my mechanic nerd grandson tried to explain to me -- for testing the circuits with a function some ways better than a multimeter -- thanks
squonk 41,171 #4 Posted December 28, 2023 The PP and the light From Eastwood can be very handy with the digital readout. Say your tractor won't start. Everybody grabs their test light first. But with the readout you touch across the battery. It says 12.5 volts. Now you touch the battery positive cable at the solenoid. It reads 9.5 volts. You now know you have a bad cable and are losing 3 volts out of it.
953 nut 55,394 #5 Posted December 28, 2023 The unit your grandson picked out appears to have an audible indication too. That would be a good thing to have when chasing down a loss of power, don't even have to look at the unit to know you have found voltage but can look at the readout to confirm full voltage. I like it.
