K161 Starter cup

Recommended Posts

MikeDR

Hi Everyone,

New to this Forum.  I have a K161T SPEC 281271 on a Horse Tiller that I got back a few years ago, just starting the process of getting it up and running. The retractable pull start was pretty stiff, so i went through a rebuild which worked out great.  The problem is that it looks like the cup attached to the flywheel was used for a while with the pawls only partially engaging, resulting in the gear/groves being stripped out in the cup.  I've looked everywhere for a replacement, 1 found one on ebay for 200 bucks, which seems ridiculous.  I thought that I'd start on here and see if anyone had an ideas to get this thing starting.

Mike

Welcome!!

I recall there are a couple of different styles and part numbers. Unbolt it, the P/N is on the back.

Place an ad in the Forum Classified under "Wanted" Pictures definetely help...

Your Best bet is to place an ad in the classifieds “wanted” section.   Also our “venders section is a good resource for locating parts..

and also Welcome to the Redsquare forum!!

I think a Tecumseh cup will work.

WHX??

Hi Mark and

:WRS:

Yes there were a few different ones. Pics would help and type of recoil. A Fairbanks or Techy style?

Name plate pic would help abit unless it's been messed with but would tell us what is supposed to be on it.

This is a Fairbanks.

I’ll post over in the classified. I don’t see a part number on the back, but from my research it should be 41 071 08-S which superseded 41 071 02-S. Here’re some pics

1. Front of starter cup

2. back of starter cup

3. pull mechanism with pawls

If I recall correctly the Tecky and Kohler cups were two different depths. I believe the Kohler was deeper. This shot doesn't show the depth but I can check once it gets light outside. Is this like yours?

Pullstart

I am sure I’ve bought those at the Big Show for much less than $200…. Maybe 1/10 of that!

Front of starter cup

Maybe try using a file to get those flats the paws catch on a little deeper.

It's already broke so nothing to loose while searching for a new cup

It looks very close, 3/4 inch deep at the teeth and 1 1/2 inches at the center.
