According to the data sheet, it should both lessen chance of infection and lessen chance of severe infection. Note that the word prevent is notably absent! No IM injection can prevent a respiratory infection altogether. It's a completely different part of the immune system at work in the lungs than the one that reacts to IM vaccines. Think suspension vs ignition. What they can do is reduce the chance of or prevent death by letting the next phase of the immune system after the one in the lungs be prepared. This is the basic science behind why the Covid vaccines can't keep you from getting Covid but they can keep it from killing you. Same basic science applies to Covid, Flu, RSV or basically any other primarily respiratory virus.
