Congratulations!  I was a vocational educator for 28 years. Retired nearly 10 years ago but still in touch with a few former students.  Very full filling profession. Best wishes to you.

Thanks,

i be the Head of Electrics In our Company since about 12 Years.

Because of troubles to find good skilled Workers we start now with the whole Company to educate

our Newbies by ourself from scratch.

Therefore a bunch of Professionals was sent to the Certification process.

I was one of them and be proud i made it in first Try.

Hi Don, thanks for your Kind words.👍

 

I never be hard to any beginners.

We need them, so scary them is a worse idea.

The idea was to win new qualified Members, not to scare them for the Job or even Company.

 

We all (me too) learned things from the beginning, no professional was anytime fallen out of Heaven. (except he forgot his parachute)

I like the situative reaction on Trainings.

I well remember how even after 17 years of education, how much I learned while “on the job.” I am quite thankful for some of my early managers and co-workers for the help they gave me.

 

Over the years, though, I came to realize that my employers wanted less and less to invest in training anyone. They wanted immediate productivity. Too often I heard “if we train them, they’ll just leave and go somewhere else afterwards” as the excuse. And of course, once the idea was out there, it became the norm for more and more companies. I still feel sorry for new entrants into the workforce facing this.

 

One company I served as a consultant, however, used some of my work to discover that at one of their factories more than 40% of an already lean workforce was within five years of retirement. It caused quite an uproar with management and they started putting a lot of effort into training, mentoring, apprenticing, and targeted hiring. They even started a program for local high schools to encourage students to consider preparing for the high-tech manufacturing jobs they had to offer. I heard back later that it was a struggle but they were able to maintain a viable workforce.

Thats the bigges challenge we must solve now with preperation on new Workers.

Find skilled workers is hard, find ambitious skilled Workers is nearly impossible.

 

I had a few Mentors in my Life, i remember even after 30years+ all their names.

Most of them reacted situative - as i do now. That was a good Way in my memory.

But they also be strict on advice especially if safety was suggested, here was no room for Jokes.

All other was more less depending on the situation.Sometimes funny, sometimes little stressy.

 

But independently at all

What i like to remember most, they give me allway’s the feeling, i be a important part of what we‘re doing.

Give the newbies a chance to show you what they can archieve.

That‘s the Way i preferr to continue.

I have to plan my USA Trip this year earlier to safe my Holiday’s for that event 

and must lock my Holiday‘s for that timeline urgently

If the new employee isn't interested in safety you want to weed them out promptly. 

On the job training is far better than classroom in my opinion. Hope your students will be given some incentive to remain with your company after being trained, so many young people have no loyalty these days.    :bitch:

I find this to be a key word. 

Invest in training. 

Invest in benefits. 

Invest in appropriate pay. 

Invest in a happy workforce.

Because those companies already KNOW they don't pay as much as the competition.

Our modern workforce makes less in America than it has in decades. 

I can't afford to be loyal if I can't afford to be alive.

One of my (admittedly not someone I respected) managers once mentioned the term “family loyalty” during a meeting about how salary increases would be lower than expected. I’d long suspected he was the beneficiary of nepotism.

Money isn‘t all.

I had 4 years ago a very interesting sounding Job offer.

Salary should be much better but the other envoirementals don‘t

 - except i should have a 4 Day (36h) job. - 

 

I talk with our Company Owner, we knew us where he was himself just an employee. 

Now he is the following Owner when Senior end his Job for Retirement because it’s a Family Company

and we keeping the face to face Level until now so i stay with „my Company“.

But for the 4 Day experiment both agreed that i will try this in sept.2023 and so i did.

 

that was the best Deal i have ever made, more lifetime for me and the half Day my Workers can still survive without me.

They be skilled enough and if troubles occur, they can be still solved on Monday.

 

 

The other Company what try to collect me didn‘t survive the Corona time. - Buff - 

So sometimes loyality has it‘s advantage. Not in worse salary jobs, that‘s clear.

The checks must be payed - 

but in this case if i changed my occupation i had lost a lot.

Home time means everything. 

I've had jobs that paid more per year but less per hour. 

A LOT more. 

But I had to live ... for work. Nothing else.  

 

My point was more of an overall condition.  Nationwide.  

 

Personally, as long as I have enough money to pay all the bills and have a couple pennies left over... I'm happy. 😀🐻🤠

In the Timeline i worked for Mercedes i earned lot of Money - more than enough,

but i never saved anything for later. Wife had Horses Childrens and so the Money goes by....

i payed my Bills and the rest was for Living. I wasted a lot of money for different things nobody needs

But i never regret of what i have done. That Job kills my first Partnership.

18-20h a day was completely normal sometimes on saturday and calling service on Sunday..

That has nothing to do with live, that is just „ living in a raw“

 

hey Man, i was young... and who cares if you are young.

we didn‘t think ’bout tomorrow because we where young....

we paid the official retirement charge and that‘s it.

 

but on my 50-er i begin to think little different.

but not because of salary - i must not be the richest guy on the Cementary.

It must be enough for me to live and not only survive - 

                 enough to do what i like to do and at least

 and i must have the time to live and do what i like.

 

This are now my Preferences and i believe they be good.

I did one year on a project with 80+ hour weeks and got a bonus that added 50% to my salary. As a “once and done” it was a worthwhile experience but it sure wasn’t good value for money!

 

To me, having a variety of work experiences was the way to go. It kept me learning and not bored and it prepared me to recognize (and chose to leave) a situation that was not working for me or for my employer.

 

I did always counsel young workers to live within their means, to begin putting something aside for retirement starting with your first paycheck, and to donate either time or money to charity every year.

That be good Advices.

 

i calculated my pension reciept and found out the difference between

40h a week and 36h a week will be a 3,65€ a Month...

Hey Man not really or?

I like my job - no doubt

and i be proud of what are we doing and producing, 

but i also like my Hometime.

 

My calculation was

if i can’t Survive in retirement 

that doesn‘t change anything basically on it with a 5 Day’s week and 3,65€ more pension in a month!!!!

 

Like you American Guy‘s allway‘s say „ You get what you pay for “ that is true also in this situation.

Don, I will add one more thing to your excellent advice to younger workers.  Don't let your job define who you are or what your potential is. Take advantage of every opportunity to learn something new because it could open doors that will lead to a brighter future.

I agree Totally in all Points @953 nut and @Handy Don

 

If i had no such great Mentors in my Life, i would have maybe stopped on my Way earlier.

Instead i never Accepted any no no from Anybody.

A no no was allway‘s a challenge for me to show them - Look, i can do this.

Learning is a continousely curve in our all Life and it never ends.

 

 

It's not important from where you come from, but it’s important what you're be willing to learn in your Life.

If you stop your learning curve it is ok. 

But than you have to Accept your Way ends here and here is your „Limit“ when you be not willing to learn further.

We be never too old to learn new things, we just be sometimes to comfortable to do it.

 

Personality is a basic but it can and it will be formed the whole Life if we want to.

 

Each person is a different individuum, some learn things easier, some learn things harder that depends on the own 

but in the harder learning curve you need a good Mentor that see and recognizes and your Potential and the ability to push you to your Limits.

 

The important lesson i have learned in my life is Selfdiscipline, the more of you have, the better it is for your own Future.

This was for me the importantst lesson on my Way.

Now it is on us „Ager‘s“ to see the potental in our Youngsters and push and form it to release their Potential.
