SylvanLakeWH 25,563 #76 Posted December 1, 2023 Just a thought: The auto stop / start feature me thinks was proposed by the companies that manufacture starters... This feature exponentially increases the number of starts per car per trip from one to ???? and no doubt will result in the need for replacement starter's years earlier... 2

Mine would stop/start 5-6 times when I go the 5 mile to the grocery store. Exactly why I turn mine off, just wish I could make off the default.

Ideally it'd stick at whatever it was at when the car was shut down. Earlier versions of my car had those choices but mine got only “Comfort” and “AWD”. 45 mpg is quite lovely! It's part of the Emissions system. Parts Per Million is still the same but the manufacturers have "eliminated" a certain percentage of emissions by shutting off the engine. Ed and Don. You can't turn off the Auto Shutoff permanently because it's part of the Emissions system and modifying that is against regulations. I can touch a button every time I start the car to temporarily eliminate the "feature".

Many of these “starters", mine included, also provide a boost of several HP on hard acceleration (think “on” ramps or passing on a two-lane) and some also supply regenerative power for battery charging when “braking”. These are often referred to as “mild hybrids”. The software to manage all these bits gets pretty interesting

Starting engines stopping engines extensive added hardware and software are not included in the "savings"... just like the incredible actual and environmental cost of getting lithium for batteries is never included in the stats for how green things are... Lifecycle costs matter.

Just read an article that the auto stop/start feature can be disabled be simply opening the hood, starting the engine, then close the hood. Anyone try it? 8ntruck 7,006 #95 Posted December 2, 2023 Our '19 Cheorkeehas the auto shut off feature. For me, part of the start up procedures is pushing the disable button before putting it in gear. Had a battery go bad in that vehicle. Would cause the engine to shut off randomly. When that happened while driving, the safety systems would not allow you to shift into neutral and crank the engine while coasting down the road. Had to pull off the road and come to a complete stop before being allowed to restart the engine. I happened across a post in a Cherokee forum that said there is a setting that adjusts the stop time before the engine shouts down. Max setting of something like 45 seconds. I have not bothered to dig around to find that setting. Pushing the off button is now an established part of operating that vehicle. 3

peter lena 8,629 #98 Posted December 2, 2023 @Pullstart @Ed Kennell always had a rotary dial phone , for the kids growing up , loved playing with it ! regularly had a conversation going on , and we would encourage that . also always had them involved in a family gathering clean up , so they knew how things happened . elders loved seeing them , assist at meals / gatherings . it just does not happen , pete
Mickwhitt 4,626 #99 Posted December 2, 2023 I remember when the only phone in our village was in a red cast iron Box at the end of our street, 2 pence for a local call, 10 pence for longer distance. We got the first home phone on our street. It was two tone green (avocado was the proper description, which must have been popular in the 1970's as everyone had a bathroom suite in it). It was a dial type phone with a reassuring buzz when you picked up the receiver. The ringer was a plain bell and it would wake the dead lol. It sat on its very own telephone table in the best room and I remember a money box at the side of it. Neighbours would call round to use the phone and pay for their call by leaving money in the box. Kids these days have no concept of how a dial phone works, and if they did they'd be so impatient at how long it takes to dial a number (remember in those days all our local numbers were six digits long. Before that they were even shorter, Scotland Yard was Whitehall 1212 and the veterinary practice in All creatures great and small was Darraby 385). We still have a landline to the house but no phone, it's purely for broadband. But Mr Musk will probably do for that with his Star link malarkey. I watched them trundle across the sky a few weeks back and thought what a shame it was that we are even ruining the sky for our increased convenience.
WHX?? 48,815 #100 Posted December 3, 2023 (edited) And hear I thought it was bizarre when @Achto says the brakes are controlled thru the radio in his wife's jeep. According to him the parking brakes are auto applied any time a door is open. Fun for a tech looking out a open door to get it squared on a lift.
