Ed Kennell 38,178 #1 Posted November 27, 2023 This is the tractor I recently purchased as a non runner with a locked up clutch pedal. I saw the ad on Marketplace and bought it for the deck. The owners Father purchased it new in 1992 and installed a new 42" SD deck in 2018. He said he was mowing this summer when the clutch locked up and now it won't start. He just wanted it gone so he could get his car in the garage. I'm a hydro guy and don't know much about these gear drives. What I found may help you gear jammers some day. I thought the belt probably came off and jammed the idler pulley against the tunnel. The belt was worn, but still in place on all three pulleys. When I pulled the tins off to find what what was locking the clutch cross shaft, I found one of the dirtiest tractors ever. Did you spot the problem? The worn belt had allowed the plate that contacts the clutch damper to go under the plunger that then sprang back out and locked the clutch. This damper and a worn belt changed this working Wheel Horse into a junk priced roller. The engine oil is past due, but at least it's on the full mark. It just amazes me that it could even run with a 99% blocked air filter. peter lena 8,629 #5 Posted November 27, 2023 @Ed Kennell agree with you on the filth build up , that over working shuttle deck belt tensioner , is telling you of spindle related bearing issues , bearing hang up collectively , drags , causing belt spring reaction , bounce . bet those spindles are bearing shot . seen a lot of those . regularly look my trio over for anything , only spring pull on my clutch pedals , and lubricated everything . do an upgrade on the deck , they can move without , noise / effort . pete 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

peter lena 8,629 #7 Posted November 27, 2023 @Ed Kennell done a number of those , leave NOTHING ROTATIONAL TO CHANCE , every bearing , gets a RE GREASE , including mule drive bearings , deck idler , PTO cone bearing , inner needle , also get after lever starting engagement area , usually sloppy , teflon washers fill up the gap , solid smooth . hard ware store , small pull out drawer section . of course lucas hd green grease , like SUPER LUBE , also in detailing , none of my decks has a squealing start , and they also spin down after use , no sudden drag stop. know your insight / experience , will LEAD the way . looking forward to the save . pete 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Pedal pushed down allowed air to enter it and on pedal release air was exhausted through a small hole in the back end of it. Could be a dirty environment for such a design. Ed Kennell 38,178 #22 Posted November 29, 2023 (edited) Too cold (20F this AM) to power wash, so I moved her into my heated shop to do some dry cleaning. There is a gas tank under the crud. The drive belt should be a 5/8 X 80.9. This one was worn down to just under 1/2" wide and measured 81.5" long and was only 3/8 thick. Off to TSC tomorrow.
