Using inline filter on gravity feed systems

Recommended Posts

JoeM

Was working on a project the other day and installed a Kohler fuel filter on an inline gravity feed system. The filter was rated at 75 micron and it really restricted the flow. I have not had any issue with these in the past on gravity feed but those tanks were a bit higher. Ended up using a Briggs 150 to solve the starvation issue.

Anyone got a better filter suggestion?

Don't know if it's better, but another alternative.

I have started to switch over to Raider fuel filters normally made for snowmobiles. No paper or cloth filter inside, just a fine screen. Microns / Shmicrons, if it's small enough to go through the fine screen it won't hurt the engine anyway. :twocents-twocents: Most factory fuel systems only relied on a fine screen.

Shmicrons  !
Agree! Our WH’s only had that screen in the tank shutoff from the factory.

i order these from amazon

They work great, never any fuel starvation issues. Do a great job catching crap in the fuel lines and they are clear so you can see how dirty the cloth is getting

They are not as easy to use. Bowl gaskets can harden and make sealing difficult. The packing on the shut offs seems to need periodic tightening and you still have to clean the fine screening.  Have them on my big tractors that is enough work none on the WHs

The oh-so-fine screen tube in the shut-off does plug up from time to time. I have no screen in the non-original shutoff on the 854 - just a 1/4" inline clear filter.... no issues.

Back in the day, I used something like this. IIRC they came with a few replacement elements. Nothing got through that was large enough to clog a main jet. 3/8" Inline Fuel Filter Clear View Glass Reusable Washable For Motorcycle Car - Picture 7 of 7

I've seen that happen too.

Likely a metric piece sold as the incorrect American measure equivalent.

I've had multiple issues with that style filter airlocking

I would have to agree with this. They say 3/16" to 1/4" fuel line. It would be more correct to say 1/4" to 5/16" fuel line. A 1/4" fuel line still fits on them with a little extra effort.

One other plus to these screen type filters is that you can back flush them to clean them out if need be.

really? I never have. I have them on my golf cart, zero turn mower, and all of my wheel horse tractors. Never once had a issues with them. I find for 1 dollar each, they are great filters, flow plenty of fuel and still do a great job filtering the fuel

75mic really shouldn't be a problem, but a 150mic should be good enough to keep the majority of stuff out.  I use Fram G12 which is 10micron, on pretty much everything i own, but everything has fuel pumps of some kind vs gravity.

@Achto  agree wit you on the fuel hose issue , all of my stuff is changed over to 5/16 , fuel line , also verified tank cap venting , is vital . lots of hose connection fittings at local / H/W  slide out drawer section /  changed out that  problematic  area , long ago . when ever I get told you can't do that  , really ? love removing a chronic issue , over the fence , pete

These are good at stopping the big stuff, same basic mesh as the old glass bowl filters, and the filters on the in-tank pickups on 300/400/500 series.
