stegs 325 #1 Posted November 27, 2023 Another one followed me home.... This one appears to be a mid 80's (tag is faded, cant see the numbers) 414-8. It has the kohler K series K321 14hp engine quick story this was listed last night (11-26) at 630pm on facebook marketplace. I messaged on it right away, and by 7pm i was loading it up. It was 10 min from my house Story behind it The girl i bought it from had it given to her by her dad last summer (summer of 2022) They were going to use it to mow the lawn on their new house. But the new lawn didnt go in until the fall of 2022, so this sat in her garage since the summer of 2022 unused When i got there, she said "my dad gave this to me last summer to use, i never used it, and i didnt know how to start it, so i just hired a lawn service to cut my grass this past year. I know nothing about the machine" I asked if it ran or if the engine was shot, and she said her dad drove it into the garage and it sat there Well, battery was dead, so in the snow i pushed it on the trailer and took it home Put the battery tender on it overnight, went out before work this morning and with a touch of starting fluid it fired right up! No smoke, no leaks, Runs and drives perfect!! Also came with a great condition plow, mower deck is the best one i have ever seen and a set of chains Should wash up nice Only thing it may need is a new battery, ill see if this one holds a charge or if its shot anyway, here is a couple pics of it! its in great shape. Stored indoors its whole life

peter lena 8,612 #4 Posted November 27, 2023 @stegs lucky you ! would really love to do a baseline recovery on that ! paint recovery , engine lubrication / chassis , wiring , also detail in that plow ! that steering quadrant area , is critical , easy to , improve on , blade edge , still good ? or turn over ? penetrating oil rub down , finish with electric palm buffer , cleaner wax . done a number of those , battery tender , etc. Pete

So when i looked it up, it shows a kohler magnum engine listed for the 414-8 my is a kohler k321 14 hp. Painted black, which i found wierd as others ive seen are red I figured 1985-1987 for sure, figuring in 88-89 they went with the kohler magnums

Well done! 2 hours ago, stegs said: Dont know if its a problem or not But this is the 3rd tractor in about 21 days #6 total Only problem there I can see is that you don't have seven. 2 hours ago, stegs said: So when i looked it up, it shows a kohler magnum engine listed for the 414-8 my is a kohler k321 14 hp. This one should be a 1985 or 1986 and it has a Magnum. If that wasn't built originally with a K series perhaps a PO swapped it out? I don't think it would be a super difficult transition. Key switch and some wiring of course would be different. There were other brands that had black K series engines from the late seventies on...

23 Reo 229 #15 Posted November 29, 2023 (edited) My 81,82 and 84 C series Horses have black Kohlers. They may have switched to black when they started making black hoods in 1980. Your 414 is probably a 85 or 86 as 84 was the last year for black hoods. Edited November 29, 2023 by 23 Reo

And from what i can tell, it seems that other 1986 414 tractors came with a black k series engine, not red. So im going to guess, but looking at the rest of the tractor that the engine in there is original, not a replacement I plowed some snow with it last night, man those gear drives will push anything. They are not as nice to use as a hydro unit, but they get so much more power to the wheels.

Even though I don't need any more projects myself it was hard to pass on.

I've had some good deals but two of my tractors and one of Trina's were gifts. She's also got one as a show of appreciation for a trade. That's four we'll likely never sell.
