We just got in a new John Deere welder/generator unit at work and it has a GX690 Honda on it. I will take a look in a while, but I think what the PO or whoever did the repower on mine did was added a toggle switch in the dash, which just goes to either an "always hot" connection or to the ignition switch to a lead that goes hot when the key is turned on. Before I cut off the pin in the solenoid, I had to remember to toggle that switch on or would get no fuel into the carb. If I remember correctly, the solenoid only has one wire that provides 12v to the solenoid and it is grounded to the carb by just being screwed into it. 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I took a picture - the red wire coming into this toggle switch is the wire from the solenoid. It comes out of the solenoid black or gray, hard to tell without some cleanup (which is sorely needed and I haven't gotten around to yet), then turns to red at a junction. The green wire pretty obviously goes right to the positive terminal on the battery. To me it makes the most sense to tap into a wire that goes hot when the key is turned on, removing the need for a toggle switch. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention, the toggle switch that's toward the bottom of the picture close to the choke is some kind of kill switch for this engine. I haven't taken the time to figure out where that goes on the engine, but it has to be flicked to "on" for the engine to run, and off to stop it even if I turn off the key. The majority of breakerless ignition systems dont apply power for ignition, the coils spark purely by the flywheel magnet passing below the legs of the coils, and the harness applies ground to stop spark. 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Yes, P Onans used a weird breakerless 12v coil like used on the Points B Onans, it used a hall effect pickup to trigger the spark. It applies 12v to the coil for power. The Honda however, will instantly torch both coils if any power is applied to the kill harness. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Red-Bovine 309 #71 Posted February 12 (edited) I'm not sure how the Honda coils are internally wired, but I didn't do anything special when I wired up mine. I just hooked up the wires per the Repower instructions. My Honda schematic shows the coils being fed off the IGN terminal on the Ignition switch, which would indicate that they are energized by the ignition switch and not grounded like a typical magneto.
