Although you did a great job cutting the hood I just do not want to do that. I might try to indent the bottom of the muffler. I couldn't cut up a nice hood. Ive extended a few twin mufflers out a few inches on swaps/repowers, even flipped a muffler over to get clearance on one

Red-Bovine 309 #54 Posted January 4 I was looking for functionality, not a collector showpiece. Since I already abandoned the Onan engine for the Honda, a little mod to the hood didn't hurt my collector status.

I need to do this again - I've burned my hand at least once.

We just got in a new John Deere welder/generator unit at work and it has a GX690 Honda on it. I haven’t looked at it too close though I keep my distance because it would be hard for me to not start unbolting her to come home with me lol 2
CCW 1,295 #61 Posted January 19 My project is on hold till mid February. Currently sitting with my granddaughters in Katy, Texas (Houston area) until January 28th and then off to Isle of Palms, SC. Back home early February. Hopefully the really cold weather will be finished and I can then complete the engine swap.
CCW 1,295 #62 Posted February 11 @davem1111 Which wire was use to connect the fuel solenoid?

I will take a look in a while, but I think what the PO or whoever did the repower on mine did was added a toggle switch in the dash, which just goes to either an "always hot" connection or to the ignition switch to a lead that goes hot when the key is turned on. Before I cut off the pin in the solenoid, I had to remember to toggle that switch on or would get no fuel into the carb. If I remember correctly, the solenoid only has one wire that provides 12v to the solenoid and it is grounded to the carb by just being screwed into it.
CCW 1,295 #64 Posted February 12 @davem1111 Thanks. I will be on the phone with Repower tech support for a work around.

I took a picture - the red wire coming into this toggle switch is the wire from the solenoid. It comes out of the solenoid black or gray, hard to tell without some cleanup (which is sorely needed and I haven't gotten around to yet), then turns to red at a junction. The green wire pretty obviously goes right to the positive terminal on the battery. To me it makes the most sense to tap into a wire that goes hot when the key is turned on, removing the need for a toggle switch. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention, the toggle switch that's toward the bottom of the picture close to the choke is some kind of kill switch for this engine. I haven't taken the time to figure out where that goes on the engine, but it has to be flicked to "on" for the engine to run, and off to stop it even if I turn off the key. Another poor choice, in my mind. Edited February 12 by davem1111

Red-Bovine 309 #67 Posted February 12 I don't recall having to wire up the fuel cutoff solenoid. I thought it was wired into the main engine wiring and energized by the ignition switch with the coil. My diagram shows it to be a BUY wire which should be a Blue/Yellow wire. I honestly don't recall. Here are some pics of the wiring harnesses. 1

The majority of breakerless ignition systems dont apply power for ignition, the coils spark purely by the flywheel magnet passing below the legs of the coils, and the harness applies ground to stop spark.
Red-Bovine 309 #69 Posted February 12 On the 520H that we repowered, the coil does appear to be powered by the ignition switch and the feed to it appears to be disrupted by a kill relay and PTO and seat switches. A tap off the ignition or accessory circuit should power the fuel cutoff.

Yes, P Onans used a weird breakerless 12v coil like used on the Points B Onans, it used a hall effect pickup to trigger the spark. It applies 12v to the coil for power. The Honda however, will instantly torch both coils if any power is applied to the kill harness.
Red-Bovine 309 #71 Posted February 12 (edited) I'm not sure how the Honda coils are internally wired, but I didn't do anything special when I wired up mine. I just hooked up the wires per the Repower instructions. My Honda schematic shows the coils being fed off the IGN terminal on the Ignition switch, which would indicate that they are energized by the ignition switch and not grounded like a typical magneto. This would be as the Onan was wired. Edited February 12 by Red-Bovine

CCW 1,295 #75 Posted February 20 A quick update on repowering. Today I finally fired up the engine. Once I get some more done and hopefully finish the job over the next two weeks I will create a final thread on the project. 1 1
