Thoughts on putting a craftsman rear end in a wheel horse with hydro?

Way to many directions to go here for a simple answer.  

 

First. IMHO. Don't. 

That's a classic garden tractor that's absolutely among the best of the models for a great worker. 

It's over 50 years old and not being made anymore.  

 

That said ... It's your tractor to do with as you like. 

 

Nothing is impossible.  

But it would be a major project. 

 

The transmission of a Wheelhorse is an integral part of the structure of the whole machine.  

 

 

 

If you really want a Wheelhorse that goes fast... Find one with a manual transmission and do a proper pulley swap with a custom built belt guard/guide. 

 

And rebuild the steering system because these are meant to go 6.5 MPH. Not 20. 

 

And the brakes.... Because increasing the speed increases the need for appropriate stopping power.  

 

It's a can of worms to open. 

 

Not to discourage you but it's important to know ALL of what you're up against.

Anything is possible with enough time and money but why replace a very stout rear end with Sears???

If the hydro in your Charger is working don't mess with it. Sears transaxles are not as strong as Wheel Horse and in my opinion you would be wasting your time and money.

I have heard of people putting chevy small blocks in tractors so why not. If you have the time and money go for it. It will be a big down grading though.

I think we should get this thing running before we modify it to the moon and back.  Let’s start with a starter generator, then see about everything else that’s been brought up.

Do you have a link where I can buy one? Im picking it up from a friend house tomorrow and bring it to school for a shop project

There are at least several types of S/G.  You need to measure the length of you mounting bracket.  WH tended to use short body S/G.  (You can resolve this with spacers sometimes) Other big issue is CW or CCW rotation.  WH used CW many other brands used CCW they are not interchangeable.

 

I would check with A to Z in the vendors section.
