Brockport Bill 1,661 #1 Posted November 23, 2023 I assume scrap metal prices vary across the country in different markets - i have never really taken anything to scrap here in Poughkeepsie, Hudson Valley, NY market -- but i do have a couple items i could take to scrap rather than drop off at the municipal recycling center -- just wondering if anyone has an idea the $ value of something like a rotted mower deck -- Guessing its valued by weight? Shell, lift carriage assembly parts, etc ? Thanks, Bill
elcamino/wheelhorse 9,297 #2 Posted November 23, 2023 if that is all you are hauling to the scrap yard , not worth the drive ( gasoline cost ). If you haul 500 pounds or more than you will get money.

953 nut 55,194 #4 Posted November 23, 2023 I have a scrap metal dealer near my home that takes scrap steel/iron at about a nickel a pound. If I don't have much I just tell the man at the scales I am giving them a gift and drop it off.
leabassett@sbcglobal.net 149 #5 Posted November 23, 2023 I am in CT and scrap every week. 5 cents a pound for what you have but if they do not know you you better have a ton if you want money. Otherwise they will take it for free. A mower deck maybe around $2
Pullstart 62,838 #6 Posted November 23, 2023 One of the yards in town posts their buying price online. Locally we are at $226/ gross ton.
23 Reo 229 #7 Posted November 23, 2023 I give my scrap metal to a small time scrapper. He collects truck and trailer loads and sells it down in Chelsea Ma. I like supporting him because I can get rid of my metal. It is getting very hard to get rid of anything in the Peoples Republic of Eastern Massachusetts. 3
mrc 812 #8 Posted November 23, 2023 i just junked a shell of a car. the shell weighed about 1500 pounds. the junkyard gave me $62. luckily the junkyard is only about 3 miles from me. usually when i have something small i place it on the tree belt in front of my house and the scrappers grab it quick. sometimes even before i can walk back to my garage!
mrc 812 #9 Posted November 23, 2023 hi pullstart, is that $226 a ton for #1 prepared steel?

The other yard pays about $10 less per ton but also pays for copper, aluminum, etc.
oliver2-44 9,739 #11 Posted November 23, 2023 About twice a year I take a small load of scrap, usually some steel, aluminum and copper. At the farm I have several trailer loads I need to clean up one of these days. In Texas the first time you sell scrap you have to have an ID like a drivers license. You get your picture taken and receive a Texas Recyclers License. The scrap yards will not buy from you without one. Everything you sell (steel, copper, aluminum, etc, is recorded under this license by weight . This helps them track illegal sales, mainly of copper and aluminum. 6

We have a scrapper that runs his route the night before garbage collection… he has picked up plenty of scrap from my curb over the years. Either that, or I take it to the dump… they have an area for scrap metal, tires, batteries, appliances, electronics, etc. Last time I went, I was taking the old garage door-since most of my trailer load was metal, I dumped for free.
Rob J. 1,941 #13 Posted November 23, 2023 Save your copper, strip it, clean it if necessary. It’s only going to go up. I got about 100lbs of clean scrap copper I should turn in. Pre-1981 pennies are like 97% copper by the way. 😉 like the others have said about steel. I just give it to a neighbor or buddy than messing with as my scrap yard is about 15 miles away. But if yours is always close by and you have a can of fix a flat why not eh? 😂

Brockport Bill 1,661 #16 Posted November 23, 2023 thanks for all the insights -- i suppose for the couple dollars value of a mower deck i may as well take to town recycling center when i do my 2x per month drop off -- thanks for insights -- Darn, i thought i'd get a vacation week from the $ proceeds -- HAHA ! Actually, i was thinking 5-10 bucks if lucky.

Metals are a commodity, and the price fluctuates both seasonaly and by demand of it. We save all our old replaced brake rotors - they average out to about 2 bucks each - during the summer when the price is up. I have two yards within 20 miles of me - one pays to the penny, the other round down to the nearest dollar........

elcamino/wheelhorse 9,297 #21 Posted November 23, 2023 My next-door neighbor and his mother enjoy beer a lot so I set up 55-gallon drums by the fence and he fills them about every two months 6 barrels are full and I haul to the aluminum scrapper and return with about $30.00 or so. I check everything for aluminum, brass, copper. last week I hauled load to the same place $194.00 in in my pocket. Yellow brass $1.80 per pound, # 2 copper $3.00 a pound, copper wire with insulation (plastic/ rubber) $0.40 per pound and clean scrap aluminum $0.40 per pound. All the steel goes to a disabled vet I met at the VA. I give him a call and he and his helper come by, and I help load.
