By the way, can anyone point me in the direction of finding a part number for the exhaust valve for a K341? I can't see any parts list in the manual

You may want to give the valve guide a close inspection also, the bent valve could have damaged it.

Which part is the valve guide? I can't see a valve guide listed in the exploded diagram that pfrederi posted

Its the tube pressed into the block that the valves ride in.

You can search eBay for Kohler K-series valve guides. Don't need a part number.

The valve guides (#11) are part of the crankcase

Removed the valve today, thought I would share a photo, you can see it has bent right at the head (probably the wrong terminology!). I did shine a torch down the valve guide, from what I can see there is no visible damage.

Now waiting for a replacement exhaust valve to arrive, don't think it is OEM but hopefully will be suitable

Quick update, I replaced the exhaust valve, reseated it using some grinding paste, checked (and adjusted) valve clearance put everything back together and managed to get the engine working again - although something is not quite right, it is very smokey and not running as it was before. But at least it is running so a step in the right direction!

I have a feeling it is something to do with the carburetor, I didn't have any new gaskets for it so put the old ones back on, also not sure I connected the throttle and choke up the right way round. Going to spend some time on Youtube looking at assembly vids, then take the carb off, clean it with new gaskets, change engine oil and hope everything runs after that

Choke and throttle should be pretty straightforward on hookups, is it black smoke or grey?

Grey smoke I think. I'll maybe try and take a vid next time I'm with the tractor

So I have solved one mystery which is where the screw came from that got sucked into the engine and caused the problem in the first place...whilst taking apart the carb I found the missing screw on the throttle plate. Will have to work out what size screw it is and try to find a replacement, but for the moment have put it back together.

However, after cleaning the carb and reassembling it with new gaskets, I can't get the engine to fire up at all now. Definitely getting compression and a spark, I'm guessing fuel isn't getting through the carb for some reason. There is fuel in the tank and I can see fuel in the filter. I'm assuming either I didn't reassemble the carb properly or have knocked something. Didn't help that the throttle cable seems to have snapped where it joins the throttle lever, so had to remove the battery and do a makeshift repair (think I will have to get a replacement cable).

Are there any ways to check what the problem could be, or check if fuel is getting to the carb? At the moment my only thought is to remove the carb again and check it was all reassembled correctly and try again.

Where do you have the mixture screws set at?  I usually start 1.5 out on the high, 1 out on the low...should get it started to fine tune them in.  Is there fuel in the bowl?

Low setting should be 2 1/2 and the main jet should be 3 1/2.

I haven't touched them from where they were when the engine was working, assumed there would be no need to adjust them. I will have a check though to see where they are set at. Haven't looked in the bowl so will also check that to see if fuel is getting in there

He mostly does Briggs and Stratton, but the underlying principals are what we need.
