Alrighty.     I'm starting with a 416 that supposedly ran when parked but was taken out of service due to a clutch pulley failure.  This does have the 1 and 1/8" axles.     I will be using a 1" spindle forward swept axle from a 520.  This has a separate clutch and brake pedal which I think I'll like.   Cons are I hate this hood design.    Like really hate it.

When I get my mind set on building something I usually go full throttle.   I enjoyed the last one and want to get back out there.

I decided to fight this today as see if it runs.     Lol runs great just had to completely bypass the tractor wiring.   I did notice a lot of oil so somethings leaking.

 

I wonder if I can swap dash and dash tower from a 520 and have the steering shaft line up.    🤔

🤔    dash tower on the 416 is solid and doesn't unbolt.     Welp guess I'll have to cut it off.    Thr 520 tower does bolt on.    Got the engine pulled.    I still can't believe it runs as good as it does.       Show it won't run right again after I get it put back on.

That oil around the bottom I suspect came from the oil filter not having a proper seal (or someone was very sloppy when changing the filter).

I don't even see an oil filter.     Did the 16hp onans not have one?

The SM for P216, P218, P220 seems to imply there should be a filter but in parts lookups, I don’t see it mentioned. Hmmm.

This drawing is the view from the PTO side rear of the P218 and P220 engines (same block) showing the fins on the rear cylinder. The filter is closer to the flywheel side and inserted through a hole in the shroud.

Maybe @RED-Z06 can clarify?

There is a filter.    It was covered in oil grime.     Bet its a pain to replace.     

 

Got the forward swept axle in as well as cut the dash tower off.    Bye bye 416 dash hello 520 dash

Actually pretty easy. There is a drip “trough” within the shroud but it’s intended for catching a few drips as you remove the filter and it expects you to clean it before putting in the new one. Critical to have the foam “collar” that seals the shroud to the filter to prevent loss of essential cooling airflow over the rear cylinder fins. 

Follow usual “new filter" procedure and be sure the seat and seal are clean and undamaged and have a light coating of oil so the rubber doesn’t bind when snugging up the filter to the block. Does help a lot to have a filter wrench!

If the filter area was gummed up the way you describe, you really should remove the tins and clean the cooling fins with degreaser. 

 

The 16hp Onan isn't as susceptible to dropping the rear valve seat as the 20hp, but it is still the same design and requires a degree of cleanliness for proper cooling.

It'll all be scrubbed down and pressure washed tomorrow. 

 

 

 

Going to have to bust the gauges out with a hammer.     Was going ti try to keep them but Toro decided to put them behind the bezel and the steering wheel won't come off.    Spent the last hour cutting crap off this dash tower.

All P series have the filter, pretty sure the B43 and B48 did too.  Its easy on the WH, pull the rubber ring out, loosen the filter, slip it out..i put rags under the frame to catch the dribble.

Well I managed to get everything pressurewashed off.     Next up is drilling the 416 dash tower to accept the 520 dash.      The 426 was a one piece I have to cutt off.   The 520 inbolted.   Amazing the amount of crap I cut off these two tractors that I don't need.     I'll go through it and save the good stuff of course.

You get X mb of space to post images for free, every image eats that storage and it shrinks.  Supporting membership allows you to post as much as you like.  When photobucket disappeared, the days of unlimited bandwidth went with it

It is possible to stretch your “upload” budget by learning to downsample images before uploading them. A typical phone image can get reduced to as little as 10% of its original size and still look good on the forum.

Not interested in editing every picture for a upload.    This isn't 1998.   High def for life around here.     I will, however, check out to become a supporter.   I've  thought about it in the past and this could be the push I need lol.

Ha.   Supporter David.   Anyways.    I need to raise the nose and take 2" or width out of the hood.      I think I'll cut a V and squeeze to match the 6 slot hood.     I am not a bodt welder at all nor do I have a welder readily available.      I may pop rivet and a kind utilitarian mad max look.   🤔

Looks like a disaster waiting to happen as far as any kind of relatively clean look goes.  The louvers will be angled and uneven, the back of the hood will pull out away from the dash.

Agreed - but the louvers will be deleted.   The 520 and 6 slot hoods were both beat up and twisted.   If all else fails Ill find a decent 520 hood(which i would have had to do anywhys).   There is a good chance ill have a cargo rack on this hood as well.  That should cover a world of sins.
