BairleaFarm 340 #1 Posted November 11, 2023 I like dash of a 520 but despise the 400 and 500 series hoods. Anyone cut up the 2 different hoods and made it look kinda OK?
Pullstart 62,925 #2 Posted November 12, 2023 @ACman kept the sheet metal around, but tossed some throw back decals on his 520. It’s pretty sweet!
kpinnc 12,159 #3 Posted November 12, 2023 I think the 518 and 516 hoods had the notch for the 520 style dash but no louvers. There might be others?
ACman 7,618 #4 Posted November 12, 2023 With help from Terry @Vinylguy we came up with decals as a throwback to the 1965 , 1075 Wheel-a-Matic. The first hydro garden tractor to come to market .
lynnmor 7,316 #5 Posted November 12, 2023 Why would one want the useless slots in the hood to let water in and rust everything?

I believe the louvers are to let heat out, so the big twins don't cook the carb, battery, and electronics. I get that it doesn't have a smooth look, but there was a practical reason. You don't leave your horses out in the rain, do you?

The louvers have nothing to do with heat and everything to do with appearance, the air flow passes sideways thru the engine. Splain this 212 Wheel Horse louvers: No forced air after you turn it off and still have very hot engine and muffler. It's not unusual to see blistered or darkened paint on tractor hoods. I don't believe they would do this for appearance when it actually looks worse. And the extra tooling to form louvers isn't cheap, there had to be a pretty compelling reason.

Not sure which 2 hoods you're referring to, but if you just don't like the louvers I guess you could flatten them with a hammer and body block, braze it up and fill with body solder. Might get some impressive temperatures under the hood without the louvers, though.

They likely used everything possible to dress it up. Edited November 13, 2023 by kpinnc

Thank you but I've got both here. Thr 520 hood is longer but I'll worry about hoods once I get a little further with the build.
BairleaFarm 340 #18 Posted December 11, 2023 I think it turned out ok. Dont zoom to much. Would have been better if I wasn't dealing with 2 bent hoods. 416 lower dash, 520 upper dash, and a Raider 12 hood.
