Colby G 233 #27 Posted November 13, 2023 (edited) Does anybody know how to tow a hydro charger 12? I need to tow it just up the road to be welded and I heard you can't just tow a hydrostatic transmission. Edited November 13, 2023 by Colby G
rjg854 11,469 #28 Posted November 13, 2023 There should be a tow valve on the tractor that will release the pressure in the transmission so you can tow it. Check your manual and see if it shows you where it is and how to use it.

Search manuals here in Redsquare for your year charger and/or the transmission if that's been swapped. There will be instructions in it.

daveoman1966 3,758 #32 Posted November 13, 2023 If original, the Charger 12 would have the Sundstrand HydroGear model 90-2046. Here is a pic of the TOW VALVE on top. Turn this TOW VALVE 90deg --left or right-- to tow the tractor. Even then, tow it slowly---at a walking pace...not fast.

I've swapped it out, but idk if it came out of a charger 12, it's quite a bit wider than the old one.

daveoman1966 3,758 #37 Posted November 14, 2023 Although the GEAR BOX may have been swapped out (wider axles), the HydroGear is still the power source...of which there are but 3 models...90-2046, 90-2062 (GT-14 tractor) and an older version model 310007. Noting that the INPUT SHAFT of your pump is the 'Double-D' shape...likely a pre 1972 model. ANYWAY... the single hyd line shown in your pic effectively bypasses the hydraulic lift system. So the last part of that paragraph means that it can just be towed or no?
daveoman1966 3,758 #41 Posted November 14, 2023 Here again is the TOW VALVE (free-wheel valve) with the LEVER in PARALLEL position...for normal operation. It does not matter whether the 'long' end of the lever is to the front or back of the tractor...either way is for NORMAL operation. For towing, turn the TOW VALVE...left or right... so that it is PERPENDICULAR TO the tractor frame. That LONG end of the lever is to make it easier to turn...that's all...except that if turned toward the back, it MAY cut into the hyd hose. The 2nd pic here is the TOW VALVE removed from the hyd pump end cap. Note that there is a hole in it...Turning the top LEVER turns this hole to either FRONT (for normal use) blocks fluid from flowing thru a BYPASS. Turn it Left or Right, then the fluid BYPASSES ---releasing pressure---and allows for towing... SLOWLY.
Colby G 233 #42 Posted November 14, 2023 And how do I tow it downhill with it having no real brakes?

I know this might not be the answer you're looking for... you don't. Only safe way to do that is to get it into a trailer or bed of something that DOES have proper brakes. ebinmaine 68,199 #44 Posted November 14, 2023 It's important to remember that even without an engine that rolling tractor weighs at least 475 lb.
