Battery Terminals

Recommended Posts

Dreamcatcher

Good Morning,

My tractors are in need of fresh batteries.   I've never seen these types of terminals on batteries before.  Do/should  I remove these terminals and install them on the new ones? Your help is much appreciated.

That's the standard type of garden tractor battery that's been used since the mid-70s. What do you have on your tractors? Can you post more pics?

Thanks Eric.  After doing a search on Wally world I realized that my terminals were nothing special.  Are all these batteries pretty much the same or is something from TSC better or worse than Wally's batteries.

Make note of the +/- orientation. They come both ways. :)

I rarely buy anything from TSC at all because around here they run a little more money than most places.

Wally world batteries seem to treat people just fine.

Biggest thing is to try to get one that has 300 CCA or more.

Pretty much the same... made by a few battery manufacturers and labeled all different brands...

AND.... Check the sticker for date of manufacture. Not smart to buy a battery with a one year warranty that is already 6 months old from sitting on a shelf......

Got into a "tinkle-fest" at my local TSC over their "first in, first out" policy. I asked the clerk if she checked the dates on milk and other perishable items... She replied that she did. SAME THING with a battery...... She went, begrudgingly to the back and came out with a fresh one!!!

East Penn makes a lot of brands, try to find one from them.  I always stay well above 300 CCA, typically 340 to 350.  Look at the code date sticker and don't buy one that is more than a few months old, discharged batteries will have a shorter life.  I always fully charge a new battery so that it isn't hit with a high charge rate when put in service.

DEKA and MK are East Penn's line of batteries.  They manufacture many other names as well.

The DEKA brand is sold by Lowes around here.

@Dreamcatcher  have battery tenders on my 3 horses , same hook up , plugin point , so its always easy to plug in , combine that with an incandescent bulb , in a reflector under engine , giving a warm up directly under oil pan . makes for solid quick starts , pete

Just an FYI:

Depends where you live Pete.

Prices vary by region. Even online.

I can't touch a 300+ CCA battery anywhere in Maine for less than 50 bucks after taxes.

Yeah, area matters a lot. Batteries are so heavy that distribution gets expensive (and they don’t have the highest markup, either!)
