I'll pick the best of the 3 sets of 1533s and use them. New outer axle bearings and new seals all around are on the way. But the 701 is an icon in a way. You don't see many that have mods. Every tractor I own is modified, and I wanted to make this one at least close to correct. You're going to be the only one that ever notices that extra 2" in track width. kpinnc 13,491 #57 Posted February 27 (edited) I figured out a way to save the original case, so that's the one I built up tonight. My "spare" case is ok as well, but I'm gonna save it for another project. The right side of the case at the axle bearing is not quite as tight (only a few thousands) as the left. The bearing couldn't be pushed by hand, but it did go in much easier than the left side. It was too tight to shim. If you look at the original disassembly, the axle bearing had slipped into the case and no longer supported the axle. So I'm going to add thin hitch pin spacers on the axle just to make a stop so the bearing can't move into the case again. The case where the bearing sits isn't worn, it's just slightly larger. Anyway- got the original case cleaned out. Ignore the black goo in the bearings. I used some assembly lube just because I didn't want to cram everything together dry. Replaced the axle bearings and all the seals (axle, brake shaft, input shaft) with all new. Borrowed a few parts from the bad 8-speed as well. 2 small capped needle bearings, and the 3 worst gears (comparison on the good/ bad gears below). Also gonna use the shifter rails so I won't have shifting issues with this transmission. I've also decided to use the differential and axles from the donor tranny. Assembly tomorrow... I'm talking top link spacers for CAT2 tractor stuff. They are 1 inch ID, thin wall steel spacers. 2 of them slip loosely over the axle, and combined allow for 1/4 "in or out" axle movement but prevent the bearing slipping into the case. The only direction the bearing can go is outward, so at least it would be visible should that happen. The spacers slip loosely over the axle and do not touch anything else inside the case. Two spacers fit perfectly between the diff end cap and outer axle bearing, but still allow for the axial in/ out play. 3 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

That one was an empty 3 speed case that I had saved for whatever reason. No gears or axles. Plenty of holes to get into. kpinnc 13,491 #65 Posted March 1 Well the transmission is all buttoned up. Bench ran it by hand. Shifts smoothly between all the gears. All new seals survived assembly. I taped the keyways on all of them. Also you can see how the spacers will work. They won't touch anything unless the axle bearing tries to slip again. kpinnc 13,491 #68 Posted March 10 Had to get a new drive pulley for the transmission. There's just no chance of cleaning the original up to a serviceable condition. It clearly rubbed the guard alot and corroded from there. The outer lip is jagged and just too pitted to work with. kpinnc 13,491 #70 Posted March 16 (edited) I don't understand why what should be the simplest restoration I've done can become an absolute PITA! Spent the biggest part of the day getting the footrests off. Dunno how I did it without breaking them, but I got both of them off. Then I stripped, cleaned, and primed the frame. Then I decided to try welding up the horrible shifter. Sheesh this thing was rotted! Turned out decent, at least it shouldn't break off in my hand. Wanted to get tires mounted. Maybe next time... kpinnc 13,491 #73 Posted March 16 Got just a little done today. Finished all the parts on the transmission. Hubs, drive pulley, brake drum and shifter installed. I want to keep this one as close to correct as possible, but studs on the hubs just make sense to me. Then I moved to the front axle. What a bleeping mess! The pivot bolts apparently were both stripped out at the grease fitting, and the PO brazed one back on. I'll either drill and re-tap or just make new ones on my lathe. And the knuckles were "welded" for whatever reason. I noticed when the tractor was together that the front wheels were toed out and looked chambered in at the top. Now I see why....
