A therapist would be happy to hear that!

I’ve learned that I’m inertial--I’ll happily work a project until something stops me and then it can be hard for me to restart.

No not me either. When I run into one that needs $$$$ or a skill I lack I have a tendency to push it to a back burner.

Except for if Cindy is involved... then I get a 🔥 lit under my a$$ to giterdone...

I'm using that one the next time the honeydoo list is activated...

Horse Newbie

I do better on projects that must get done without stoppage…

like for instance the garage door I just put up.

Other things like “ another “ Wheel Horse, I can take a break, but then when I get back on it, I tend to push on through…

I feel certain that there is a clinical name for this. Of course mine would be hyphenated with several other issues...  I won't call it a disorder, because it's quite frankly alot of fun!

But it's nice to know I'm not alone!

Interesting. Can having a “disorder” also be fun?

You are definitely not alone.:)

Yes.

A Haiku... perhaps, to explain:

Wheel Horse disorder

Why would you stop at just one

That is crazy talk

Well I got the basic dissasembly done today. Majority of the hard to find stuff is good. Fuel tank, lower steering, front axle, and footrests.

The drive belt guard is a mess. It's all there, but looks like someone just ripped the last bolt off when the couldn't remove it. There are two distinct creases (traced with a sharpie) in the main flat, and a bend in the corner of the top where the two top screws attach. I am not good at sheetmetal work, but it's much better than it was. Maybe tomorrow I'll get it to a decent shape.

And every nut on the tranny is rusted so bad that I guess I'll have to drill the bolt head and drive them out. The hitch pin is gonna be a bear. I cut it off flush and drilled a hole to center the punch so it won't swedge the end. It is really stuck!

I was surprised to see the tranny mount plate isn't cracked. Seems for every good thing I find, there are several bad!

Oh well, it's on its way.

Had to try and get the bolts outta the transmission today. Got them all out, but I've never seen nuts rusted down like these. Thank goodness for my impact driver. The bolt side looked fine, so I spun them with a chisel against the nuts. Shockingly, it worked. All bolts are out.

Unfortunately no chance on the hitch pin. I drilled 1/2 inch past the tranny boss, but no amount of heat or Kroil would break it loose.

So I made up a shallow electrolysis tank and set it to fizzing. I'll let it go for a couple days and try again.

I've got the correct K161. I need to check it over well, as I have never seen it run.

At least a regular compression checker will work with that engine.

Be interesting to see how well the electrolysis works on the hitch pin.

Something has to. I've never seen one this stuck.

Tomorrow evening I'll give it a shot. Changed sacrificial steel out today because it was gone. I used old steel bandsaw blades, and they dissolved in 36 hours.

Ok just wondering. I have a 701 parts motor here some is gonna get for a four letter word.

Looking at the rest of the tranny no wonder the hitch pin. Another thing you can try is drill holes along the bottom where no one sees and keep them full of your fav oil.

Good grief I finally got the dadgum hitch pin out. I know I've been in a half dozen or more of these, and this was the worst ever. Kroil soaked, electrolysis, heat, repeat. Drilled down an inch or so and beat this one much harder than any before. It finally moved about 1/8 today.

Inside the case is ugly, but actually far better than I expected. Alot of gross stuff, but they gears and contact surfaces are free of pits. It will clean up nicely.

Yer good man.

Whilst I was in there fiddlin' around I'd be likely to pop out those inner weel bearings and give em a good cleaning.. along with the axle tubes immediately behind them.

Thank ya sir!

I got most of the gears de-rusted, but the case can wait for the weekend. I need to figure out if I need a new bearing set. The 1533 bearings feel nice and snug, so they at least won't get replaced.

No major pitting or chipped gears, though there are a few. Definitely some discoloration from water, but not much else. I have seen and used worse, so it's good for the moment.

Gotta split the diff over the weekend too. It's about the nastiest part so far.

That turned out great!

But how was the INSIDE of that tranny drier than the outside???

My 701 transmission had literally almost no oil in it, but had clumps of grease everywhere. Literally squirts from a grease gun, I assume through the shifter hole. It looked like bird droppings. I guess the PO had no clue and thought it would be better than nothing.

As it always seems to be the case, my transmission has a few more issues than I initially saw. Firstly, some eagle-eyed folks may have noticed (I saw it but ignored it) that one axle bearings was in a strange place. I figured somehow it got there during all the beatings that I gave this thing getting it apart. Nope... the case somehow got wallowed out so that the bearing could slip. The axle on that side has a small ring that I believe is just deep enough to prevent the seal from doing it's job. Also- some of the gear teeth that were in the bottom are chipped more than I thought.

Luckily I do have another 3 speed case, and a 8-speed that has a damaged case. I'm hoping to use not only the newer shifter rails but the differential bull gear and brake shaft as well as  possibly any other gears from it that are the same. The problem is that I do not have another axle of the same length, but do have a nice pair from the donor 8-speed. Of course they are 1 inch longer, so I'm not sure if they will look OK on this machine. Anyone got an opinion on using these axles?
