Eaton 1100 problem

I Have a machine with an Eaton 1100 transmission. It's not a yard tractor, it's a small Huber Roller.  When the tansmission gets warm, it stops moving the machine and I get spurts of hydraulic oil back out through the resevoir.  My questions:

1. What is causing this?

2. Is this a problem that can be fixed with a seal kit?

3. If not, does anybody have a source for a used Eaton1100 at a reasonable price? 

This machine was built in the 60's and I really don't want to sink a lot of $ into it.

I live in Coastal NC.

With the cooling fins on the line and the filthy fins on the unit, I have to wonder if there is a fan missing.  Wheel Horse tractors have a plastic fan next to the fins and when they are missing or broken overheating will happen quickly.

One problem I seen with the 1100's the get warm and struggle is the damping piston o-rings get worn or have a defect. Especially if the machine does the same forward and reverse. 

If you want to do a test by changing to 40 or 50w oil. Might just get you by. ??

That particular 1100 looks like it has a splines input making it pretty special, the WH ones are smooth keyed.

It sounds like it over heating, I had a tractor that had all the blades on the fan break off and it did the same thing.

I concur that it is overheating.  Now more questions:

1. will keeping the unit cooler (Using the fans I see on many applications of this tranny) alliveate this problem?

2. Since the splined shaft indicates that it is special. (I gave a pic of the numbers hoping it would help.) I doubt the seal kit that is availabel from Jack's would fit.

3. I'm currently running Tractor supply Hydraulic oil. Before I knew what brand this thign was, I put 30W in, that (no surpise) did nothing. What is the recomended oil and can I just load it wiht STP liek we used to do. (yeah, I'm that old)

Should be good. 

If it is bypassing internally, it will only get worse as it heats up and then more heat will be generated. viscous cycle

I am not sure about your machine but have seen some with small 12v fans blowing on the hydro. The wheel horse ones are input shaft mounted fan.

Many hydraulic oil are a 10 or 20wt. So they would be on the thin side. 
What  do you mean “did nothing” with the 30wt?

:twocents-02cents:          If that was mine I would buy an automotive aftermarket oil cooler and electric fan to replace the small cooling loop. Very little oil is going to be in direct contact with the walls of that loop and most of the heat won't be removed.

Aftermarket cooler and fan. Excellent idea, but what pressure am I dealing with?

\Running 30W it had no power and barely moved. TS hyd oil is much thicker. The machine runs well, until hot.  I'm going to pressure wash the unit to clean the fins and runa cooling fan.  DOes anybody have nay evperience with the lawn mower graveyard out in Indiana? Getting parts, etc.

Here's what's in it now.  Runs well and quiet, until it gets hot. I like the aftermarket cooler and fan idea a long as the cooler will take the pressure.

That travelers being an ISO 46  would put it between a 15-20 wt oil.  (There are to many different scales to measure oils on!)

Its interesting that the TS hyd oil appears much thicker since it is somewhere between a 15/20 weight.  Di9d you use a straight 30 wt or was it a 10w30?  

Just trying to reason why it would work better on one oil vs another.  It working better on the thicker oil makes sense, the oil rating numbers just don't add up. 

 

I don't have any direct experience with lawn Mower Graveyard.  But I have read other post where the owner can give you a great deal on one part and ask for gold for the next part.  I've also read on some days he can be very rude, so go with a thick skin and know your lhow much you want to pay for something .   You might get a good deal/ or maybe not.
