Rubber Toggles That Hold the Hood Down

Are those things a replaceable part?  Tractor is a 314-8.  They are split almost all the way in half, and it won't be long.  Thanks.

 

I don't even know if they are called "toggles"  Probably some other name.  If you know the correct name so I can do a search, I'm down for it.  Thanks again.

Be ready. The material in the some newer toggle hold-down’s I bought is not as flexible/stretchy as the original WH ones. Hence the mount positioning and length must be carefully considered.

@ri702bill:  I checked with McMaster, they have them, too.  That place has the greatest selection of gadgets in the galaxy.  I bet you could buy stuff there that would keep even your mother-in-law happy.

Do I have to drill out the old rivets, then get a rivet gun?  Is that how those toggles are replaced?   Thanks.

These might still be available from a Toro dealer.  I was on the Toro master parts web site a while ago, and I seem to remember them as still being an active part number.

Yes, if you want to replace the latch as well. Toro dealers have them as well as Parts tree . # 106825 Handle and Latch. rivets not included.

@JCM  The latches seem to be solidly mounted.  It looks like you can disassemble the old assembly and replace just the rubber part.  Thanks for responding

Yes you can. Small cotter and pin removal to replace just the rubber. @hotajax

Achto:  The rubber latches that are on there now do not have the cotter pin ass'y, and from what I can see the rivets have to come out to get off the old latches.  What is the best way to remove the rivets?  It looks like they are attached from the inside, and "big head" on the rivet is on the outside of the tractor.  Thanks gents.

One method would be to grind the inside of them smooth & then punch them out. You can also drill them out if you can find a good center on them.

FWIW, I tried ordering some of these from the jungle site.

They were solidly made, and the ones I got had stainless hardware, but the “rubber” did not have even as much elasticity as the ones I’d be replacing!

I recently got them from Brian at K+B Wheel Horse Parts. They have the removable pin so you can just replace the rubber part.

I was not crazy about grinding off the end caps.  It looks like the only way  Thanks for helping out

1/8 inch drill and go careful on the rivets.

If the rivets are 1/8” I would use a drill that is a bit larger so that it will cut the head off without entering the part.  Just stop when the head is coming free.

Also, this is a good time to break out a sharp drill bit and go slow.
