In other news.....

I'll be wiring tomorrow.

I'll post pics when I can but I have questions.

Non stock system so I can't just follow a schematic diagram.

Here's a picture of the back of the switch.

I know we touched on this earlier but I'm still confused as to what G and M terminals should be connected to.

Do you need a picture of that piece ?

If I could get a picture or measurements or both that would be awesome. I'm hoping I can make something out of strap steel and a bolt maybe?

I am traveling for Thanksgiving now. I will get those pics with measurements ASAP …

 Maybe G = ground, M = magneto…

Wild guess….

 My thoughts exactly ...

But I don't remember the G being anywhere particular.

Trina and I were talking this over a few minutes ago about the wiring.

We believe that the RED wire coming out from behind the flywheel was connected to the ammeter which was in turn connected directly to the solenoid so it was direct battery connection all the time.

The switch has:

G. Ground

M. Magneto

S.  Solenoid

B. Battery

L. Lights

We're pretty sure that B & L were NOT connected when we got the tractor.

Just tossing this out there…

any chance “S” stands for start ?

But I guess not- that would probably be an “I” for Ignition , huh ?

It kinda could.... Still would have the same connection.

No "I"  on this one.

Never was....

But I don't know if this switch is from the Wheelhorse or the crapsmann.

Do we know if this switch is in good condition?  Best bet would be to buy a new 103-991 switch and use the Operator Manual wiring diagram. That way if a problem popped up later you could go directly back to the diagram.

This was a running tractor when we got it.

I may very well have a 103991 here though.

Ground wire goes to a small screw like stud with a blade that the kill wire slides onto. Grounds the Mag to shut off the tractor. If you need one ,I will try to get a picture.

Magneto.. wire goes to the Magneto (coil)

Solenoid.. goes to the small post on the solenoid

Battery.. goes to the positive battery cable on the solenoid

Lights?? You sure the switch doesn't have ACC on it??

I forget how the charging wire and the Amp gauge is wired. I think I didn't put one on my GT1848. Battling a bad head cold at the moment and I don't remember.

Don't really need a head cold for that, I have CRS most of the time!!

Excellent.

Nope.  3 positions.

Off.

Run.

Start.

Likely I'll leave these two disconnected for now.

I'll be leaving the amp gauge OUT of this tractor.

The tab marked "G" is strapped to the case. That is always the ground.

Hope you can make this out. The shiny part is a screw stud that has a wire blade style that the ground wire goes to.

I wouldn't think you would necessarily have to use the stud for a ground, I would think any ground would work.

I put an M8 on an older Charger and run the ground wire to a nut/bolt on the tractor and it works. 20231122_060937.jpg.57ffe2b5628318a459c0abfab89e62a4.jpg

My thought too.

This is perfect.  Thank you.

On an older switch at least, that ground strap is a dead giveaway to what type ignition it is intended for. The older coil ignition type won't have a ground.

You guys are really moving on this resto!

Yepp.

That's the reason I refuse to use (or recommend) aftermarket switches that aren't marked.

I've seen a few.  IMHO an unmarked switch is absolute garbage.

We're getting there!

Won't be as much progress as I was figuring today because we got more snow than forecast.

Seat time on The Military Tribute Tractor "Millie"  for Trina!! Gotta get it set up first.

Agreed. I've seen a few "new" switches that at least appear to work with either type ignition, and they will make you burn stuff up if you try to use the factory plug.

Wow, already? All we got is rain, but that's normal here.

Forgive the hijack. I'm just shocked you guys have snow this early.

Early???

Oh boy.  Oh boy.  Oh boy.  Oh boy.  Oh boy.  Oh boy.  Oh boy.

Son we needs to talk.

Today is November 22nd.

This is near to THE LATEST day in the year we've had the first measurable snow (we've seen flurries several times).

Our growing season is ended by the first frost usually in mid September.

We normally get a measurable snow sometime in October. Occasionally late September.

The last 20 years things have been changing.

Maine is the state that is warming the fastest of the lower 48.

Our weather is not what it once was.

But the winters are still pretty aggressive.

If and I do mean IF we get any significant snow, it's usually early spring stuff. I've had one white Christmas in my 53 years. A couple more near misses.

Last year was pretty cold for us, with several single digit nights. Not unusual to have them, but last year we had quite a few by comparison.
