Could someone with an early 80s tractor show me EXACTLY what this is all about?

 

 

 

 

 

I see the area in question. 

I understand the bolt movement. (That doesn't matter here because there's no PTO switch.)

My issue is the PTO spring. 

It keeps coming out of the little hole where I think it belongs.

There should be a cotter pin in the pto handle and the one end of the spring goes into the open part of the cotter pin. 

 

Can't remember without looking where the other end of the spring goes without looking, of course. Is that the part you need to know about??

There is a cotter pin in the PTO rod not far from the handle end.

 

Other and of spring hooks into bottom of L shaped bracket that is used to hold belt cover on.

The cotter pin end is good. 

I've got the spring in the same hole as the above pic but it may be too long. 

The spring has come out of that end and settled BESIDE the hole twice now.

Your spring must be too long.

Mine stays tight all the time.

@ebinmaine,

I don’t know how much this will help but I took some pics and some measurements on the bracket that mounts over the carb and holds the air box lid.

 

1. The bracket is 3” long and 1/2” wide.

(If you fab your own the actual length of the metal may be longer before you start bending. The finished piece is 3” from end to end).

The heads of the two bolts are 5/16. I would guess the diameter is a number 8.

 

2. The height of the bracket is 1/2”( not including the bolt that the top slides down over)

 

The bolt that sticks up through the lid is 1/4x 20x 3/4”.

 

( P.S.  The pics probably doesn’t look like the measurements I gave, but I could see the lengths on the stick rule better than the camera could snap)

 

Let me know if I need to try again.

It's a Briggs and Stratton 18 HP twin flathead opposed.

Well the wiring harness was bugging me some. 

There was a couple terminals that were looser than I'd like. 

There was a couple wires that my very particular mind couldn't leave. 

I also had Trina pick up a new 300cca battery and the terminals were reversed.  

 

So I pulled a few things out. 

I put a few things back. 

Swapped a few things around. 

The only cable I needed to replace was the main ground from battery to chassis.  I'd already made a ground jumper from chassis to engine.  

 

Took a few hours but I'm a LOT happier about the wiring now.  

 

 

 

 

I also got all the lights wired directly to the battery. 

I figure the LED lights won't be likely to drain the battery because they'll be using the tractor for long enough to recharge every time.  

 

 

 

 

We got the plow and frame all on. 

 

 

 

We'll be delivering the tractor tomorrow!!

 

In the morning we'll try to get the frame of the cab in place. 

It's an older cab for a 1979 narrower hood with a single cylinder engine. 

This means the front lower portion below the windshield can't be used because of the exhaust exit location.  

It'll certainly be good for protection the rest of the area though.

I have to say, I bought my used GT1800 over 20 years ago and work the crap out of it. From plowing snow to skidding logs (trees) out of the woods and still mow with it. It IS a Work Horse!

Man. They are SUPER excited too. 

He "cleaned out a space"  in an already VERY clean organized garage.  

 

They went and got NON ETHANOL GAS.  

(Trina actually made that a requirement for us to keep maintaining the machine.)

 

I'm hoping we can talk them into signing up here. 

I don't know if they're internety folk.  

 

This will be a great machine for them with a good maintenance future as well.

Agreed.  

I've been a Briggs fan for decades. 

Knowing what I do now about the Eaton 1100 and that Briggs and the platform its all on....

That's a tractor.

No sir. 

The machine was being cranky.  

 

We loaded it up on the trailer and I was about to strap it down. 

The plow was still up. 

I tried <<< note that word, to restart so the Hydro could push the plow down. 

 

 

No start. 

 

Yesterday I put two new spark plugs in. 

Drove it around some plowing the dooryard. 

Today drove it around more. 

Adjust the carb about 2/3 of a fine hair. 

 

Seems to be running well. 

 

So tomorrow.

We can't take credit for that one. 

It's similar to some stock Wheelhorse setups I've seen but MUCH beefier.

That is the same as the battery hold down on my 418-C and 310-8. I had to replace one on another  years ago and used a piece of Stainless steel angel iron with notches cut out to assure it wouldn't contact the battery terminals. Wish I had taken pictures       guess if I don't have pictures it didn't happen.

Here is a couple of picture showing a pair of battery hold downs I made.

Top one mimics the factory one and the bottom one is made from a piece of angle iron.

Both made from stainless steel.
