We replaced the stock Wheelhorse worn out tie rods with a couple slightly better ones we had here.  

The pic is at an angle that magnifies the tow out but... It is still way off.  

They'll need to get a set or have us make some up that can straighten things out.  

 

I ordered the fixins from MMC for a spare set anyway.

That seems to boogie pretty good. Can you feel the gearing difference between that tractor and your other hydros?

She do fly right along.  

 

I have ONLY one other.  My 1975 C160 Automatic.  That's a Sundstrand of course.  

 

I believe this Workhorse with the Eaton 1100 may be ((??)) a bit faster forward. Definitely faster in reverse.

Couldn't get the steering tow out to set right so I made a new set of adjustable tie rods.

Nice looking tie rods, Eric. What did you use for the tubing between the ends? I was thinking plain old black pipe would be suitable, but never looked up the dimensions for tapping the threads.

I have several sets of parts on hand. 

I wish I could remember where I got these. 

 

They appear to be stainless or very good steel like a chromoly alloy.  

Black iron pipe would likely work fine if you could get a size small enough to tap. 

 

We normally switch over to Heim joints.  

I don't even remember why I had these pieces on hand.

  I believe the GT1800 or GT1848 has the faster rear end gearing that came with the 520HC.   Should be a bit faster than any other Eaton 1100 equipped Wheel Horse.

I've read that a couple other times but can't find proof other than anecdotal.  

I'd be interested to see it in Wheelhorse literature.

When I build the Heim joints I go to a 7/16" double male ends. 

The 3/8" holes in the tractor are normally wallowed out a little oblong and the next step up to 7/16" requires just enough drilling to round out the holes. 

Another advantage is the 7/16" parts are a LOT stronger than the 3/8". 

 

I buy the Heim joints and jam nuts from McMaster Carr.   

 

You may be able to find center pieces as small swage tubes. 

If you have access to a metal lathe you could use the old tie rods as blanks to be cut and male threaded for use with female Heim joints.

520 HC top speed is 7.5 MPH according to the owners manual

520H top speed is 6.4 MPH according to the owners manual.

 

If that is all true then the GT1800 is faster than the 520H but still not as fast as the 520HC.

I don't have an owners manual downloaded that has a Sunstrand.

 

If you know the model of tractor you may find an owners manual here.

 

Near the front of the manual should be the specs.

South Bend Heavy 10 "war baby" sits about 20 ft from me. And it's got the exemption tag from WW2. Tool shop version, meaning it came fully loaded with all the goodies 

 

So, I'll have to warm up the war baby on tie rod day (TBA).

Trina will if the new owners wanna spend the money.  

 

We're trying to be frugal at the beginning of their ownership because they've never had a REAL Garden Tractor.  

 

If they like it they'll keep fixing it up as we have it in for maintenance.  

 

If it's not their thing we'll buy back the implements (or even the whole set-up) in a year or two.

@ebinmaine I think I have a set of hood decals for the Work Horse. I don’t have the fender decal. These are NOS, I didn’t use them on my Work Horse restoration because Terri assured me that his would not match the exact color as the factory ones. I needed the fender to be exact match as the hood decals for my restoration so I bought an entire set.  If you are interested text me your address and they’re yours. 👍🏻
