JoeM 7,874 #4 Posted October 14, 2023 SM at toro says the gear drive info for Internal Service Repair procedures for the Peerless 820 trans axle are available from Tecumseh Products Company, Technician's Handbook # 691218. Most of those were packed with grease and non serviceable. I sure someone that has worked on these will come along soon. Ed Kennell 38,179 #5 Posted October 14, 2023 to the Chris. I have zero experience with the Peerless transmissions. Looks like Joe has posted the manual link you need. Some general checks you can make . Jack up the rear securely and rotate each wheel . Push each wheel radially. Any movement up/down or left/right indicates a bad axle bearing. Start the engine and run it in all gears to determine if the noise is gear related. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

8ntruck 7,006 #7 Posted October 15, 2023 A couple of thoughts: The input pulley on the transmission might have slipped on the shaft and be rubbing on the transmission case. Something might be wrapped around the input shaft between the pulley and transmission case. I had a Craftsman lawn mower a couple decades ago with a similar transmission. I got into it a couple of times to replace the bevel input gears. Seems like the pulley shaft was running in a bronze bearing - don't hold me too that, those details are buried too deep in my mental archives to be really accurate. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
