If you are talking about axle  movement up down front back that is not good.  In and out play up to 1/8" is OK

Strap in, be prepared to enjoy the ride.... Bearings, seals (4), case gasket, a shifter boot, new oil can run a C-Note or more...

Do it right, do it once.............

You will need to open up the transaxle to replace the bearings but can leave the pump, output gears and hoses connected, just hang them from the steering wheel while you remove the rest. The 5ransaxle is all gears and shafts, no hydro parts need to be replaced if the only problem is the axle bearings.. One of the lower bolts on the mounting plate is a very tight fit, get a 1/4" drive 9/16 short socket before you even begin the removal, you'll need it.

I have included the acceleration springs as they are subject to being broken after five decades of hard work.

Listed below are the minimum number of parts you will need if the axle bearings are the only ones being replaced. Lowell @wheelhorseman has the parts you will need, he is great to deal with and can help you find other parts I may have forgotten.

Probably won't need to because they don't carry the weight of the ntractor like the outer ones. Of course you will want to examine all of the bearings.
