moe1965 737 #1 Posted October 3, 2023 I have a b100 that I'm trying to get the tow valve to back out in case I ever need to use it. The PO must have tried to do the same thing and you can no longer use a screwdriver to turn it because one of the ears is broken off. I have put penetrating oil and some heat from a hand held torch but didn't go crazy with heat and used a small pipe wrench and still can't get it to back out. . I'm afraid to heat it up to much because I don't want to damage any seals or anything inside. Any suggestions thanks in advance Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

peter lena 8,612 #4 Posted October 3, 2023 @moe1965 have any steel pipe , 1, 1/2 " about 3, 4 ft. long ? take advantage of solid movement point , like a 14 / 18 " pipe wrench with 2 / 3 ft. of leverage on that . get a very solid bite on that , so every bit of leverage advantage , is working for you , also like KROIL for lube creep . actually that solid mount / start point , will give a longer leverage advantage , pete Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
moe1965 737 #5 Posted October 3, 2023 I'll give it another try I'm just afraid of snapping it off I'll give it a few days of spraying Krols on it and giving it time. Also when I get it to move can I take it out completely without springs and ball bearings flying out. I'm assuming it's like a on off fuel valve. I want to fix the end of it for future use if I need it by either cutting a slot in it for a screwdriver or I'll weld a nut on it. Thanks again Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Lane Ranger 10,968 #6 Posted October 3, 2023 I sold my neighbor a B-100 hydro that had a sticky tow valve that needed loosening up. His solution was pretty good . He placed a channel lock pliers on the tow valve hanging down and sprayed with penetrating fluid. I've had good luck using a large vice grip pliers, clamped very tightly. I lifted the front of he horse fairly high to get the tow valve at a 45 degree. I put a temporary bead of caulk around the edge of the tow valve to form a dam to hold the penetrant in a pool to soak for several days. pacer 3,169 #10 Posted October 3, 2023 I'm with the pipe wrench group, vice grips just wont hold like a pipe wrench ..... I had a stuck one on a 'Big D' and only got it loose when I finally needed to pull the the whole unit for other work/repair. Got it on the bench and had to end up cobbling up a hold down apparatus (what a pain!) in order to use the pipe wrench, which a 10" wouldnt budge, switched to a 14 and cheater pipe and .... POW!! it finally gave up. Amazing how those things can get so stuck (kinda like a steering wheel) The flat blade slot was completely gone by then, so I welded a nut on the end .... comes loose real easy NOW! 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

peter lena 8,612 #12 Posted October 3, 2023 @pacer had a lot of luck with KROIL , have also gotten in the habit of starting a soak on any spot , and letting it soak in the vibration lube , have also pipe wrenched spots , with added weight , and driven it around a few days , one solid hit with a 3 lb. hammer always does it .my pipefitter partner , showed me many tricks and views of how to deal with frozen joints , go KROIL , pete Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I took a cap off a water bottle and used some sticky adhesive I had and cut a hole in it stuck it around the tow valve and filled it with kroles and let it set for a few days I'm not going to say it backed right out but it was little effort and it started to turn.
