I may have missed it but is that regal red paint?

Rust-Oleum 2x Apple Red Gloss. It's a little brighter red than the Wheel Horse colors.

Same color as

My 1975 C160 Automatic.

It's actually a pretty close match to one of the colors Mackissic used on their own equipment.

I got a few minutes to get back into this bearing swap today.

Here's the two I ordered.

The one on the left is what I knew I needed.

The right side is a different brand and part number but appeared usable.

Curiosity got the better of me so I wanted to see it.

Both are USA made New Old Stock.

Good thing I got two... because one was bad. Possible shipping damage. ?

See how the inner bearing is knocked outta plane...

I unbolted the side again and removed the bad (old) bearing.

Got it all bolted back together.

Then I adjusted the side chipper anvil.

1/16" clearance.

Added grease to the replacement bearing.

Went to grease the oldest bearing... (original green paint??) But the grease zerk was broken. I knew that but had forgotten.

I found a set of ez outs last year. Put them to work.

I'll stop by the hardware store next chance I can.

That is a self-aligning bearing. The outside is spherical so you could turn it 90 degrees in the housing to remove it.

If the mounting locations on each side were not identical a straight shaft would align the bearings to operate correctly.

Quite true for a normal operating unit.

This one was unwrapped and bone dry  when it arrived. It has some surface rust on the outside and the rotation of the bearing feels rough.

It won't take grease and won't straighten.

Unfortunately it appears this one's been stored dry too long and damaged beyond use.

If you are unable to return it, I’d consider dosing with penetrant and letting it sit for a few weeks and if it comes free, dose it with a light machine oil so you can exercise it while feeling for significant bearing issues. It might be handy, if you can revive it, as a backup spare.

I stopped by the hardware store and grabbed some new grease zerks in 2 sizes.

I know there's some larger ones  around here but these are always welcome as spares.

New fitting in place.

Extra dose of nice new red grease.

I over filled it while rotating the shaft so the old gunk would be emptied as much as possible.

Here's what I came up with for an idler setup.

20240704_080600.jpg.f5cae38d0d38b1831e998602c49c8e12.jpg

I used L brackets I'd ordered for the Two Stage Tall Chute snowblower last year.

I pulled the digital tach out and checked the engine upper RPM limit.

It was set quite low. I knew it getting quiet. 5 years ago I had it just over 3000 RPM. This morning it was at about 2500, 2600.

Didn't really matter not having any engine driven implements on.

I corrected that.

Engine RPM max:

Unloaded. 3300, 3325

Chipper engaged. 3275, 3295

Chipper RPM. 2475, 2500

Chipper could be a couple hundred rpm higher but we'll test it this way and see how it does.

Likely leave it.

I put all the decals on this morning.

Thanks!

I'll have a video posted soon.

Definitely needs the interior screen. Otherwise works excellent!
