Here's the box of hardware, new side bearing, and pulleys for this particular project.  

 

 

 

The pulleys are stock replacement for some late model mowers.

Been getting back around to this chipper project a little.  

I've run a couple few things in the E tank.  

Here's the small input door and side.  

 

 

I'm not going for awesome looks here. 

Definitely want solidity. 

The E tank prepped pieces will be wire brushed and/ or sanded, then painted.

Power REQUIREMENTS would be based on what hardness of wood you'd be processing. 

IMHO it should be a minimum 12 HP. 

I've seen stand alone units online with 8 HP engines.  

My 16 HP Kohler never gets bogged down but might if the belt had better grip. 

 

I believe the capacity of the side feed for larger branches is 3".

With a soft wood like pine or hemlock it'll chop as fast as I can feed it.  

 

With good blade adjustment and sharpness along with good belt grip I believe it could do that with a hardwood like maple or oak too.

These machines came originally as stand-alone units with either 5 or 8 hp B&S L-head engine.

 

I have a standalone 6.5hp chipper/hammer mill shredder with similar capacity to Eric’s (Troybilt Tomahawk)

With a sharp chipper blade it’ll take dry 2.5+" hardwood branches smoothly and steadily. Spec max is 3”. It is possible to stall it by overloading the hopper with a sudden bundle of 1” sticks but fed more slowly, it simply mulches it all.

This same machine with a 8hp engine (my son’s) goes quicker and is harder to stall.

Imagine that with roughly twice the torque? 🫨

 

We've gotten in to the habit of putting anything bigger than a broomstick in the side Chute.  

The side needs to be push fed. 

The top PULLS things in.

Yep, same practice here.

This is one of two things I own that would happily maim me so more hp? Naw.

My machine operating experience over the years shows me that  given appropriate PPE it's no more dangerous at higher levels. 

It may in fact even be safer when stronger because it's more predictable. Less chance of stalling.  

 

I can advise to NEVER wear gloves when feeding the top. NEVER. 

The branches will absolutely pull a loose fitting hand cover with them.

This is why I will never loan this thing to anyone unless I accompany it. 

Treated with great respect, it's a terrific machine. Be casual and woe will ensue.

Thanks gentlemen. I can only say 'amen' to the gloves part. Better to have some scratches because of not wearing gloves than to be missing (part of) a limb.

 

Reading about the HP rating I'd say my 512-D would have no problem running a unit like this. Branch capacity is decent in my book.

I don't have a real need for a chipper (yet) but I've had several occasions where it would have been 'nice to have'. Maybe in the future I can justify buying or building one.

 

In the meantime I'll just be watching this restoration

I can honestly say that mine was the first piece of equipment I’ve owned that once fired up, immediately demanded respect. The second piece would be the 2-stage snow blower on the front of my 522xi. 100% attention needed at all times

 

I have my chipper on the front of my 314-8.  It crossed my mind to adapt it to the 522xi, but I don’t think I want that much engine driving it.

At the capacity of the chipper I'm not sure you'd notice much difference between the 14 and 20. 

Those single cylinder Kohlers in the 12 to 16 range are pretty fair torque producers.

This is what the container looks like after about 15 or 16 hours. 

12V 8 Amp power supply. 

 

The part is one of the side mounting brackets.  

Easy to see where it sits in the sauce. The lighter colored line.

The Paint Department decided today was a reasonable day to lay out some primer and paint.

I went through the box of hardware I have waiting for this project. Didn't find any screws for the knife or anvil so I ordered those. 

I believe we have everything needed for reassembly. 

 

Today The Paint Department AKA BBT did some more spraying. 

Nearly finished with paint. 

 

Both large sides.

REASSEMBLY  TIME!

 

 

We took some time to get all the pieces in the same space. 

Got all the bolts and parts organized. 

 

First order of business was to replace the temporarily installed zip ties with permanent proper good quality cotter pins. 

 

 

Next we fastened the right side bearing. 

Then the right side to the bottom. That took some finagling because the case is dented and bent from use. Structurally still very strong so I did not try to straighten it. 

Then we added the left side and bolted those 3 pieces all together. 

The flywheel is only slid in. Not attached yet.

New key. Taperlock bushing cleaned out, reinstalled and properly tightened. 

 

Mainshaft side to side reinstalled at original location.

All back together but not yet operable. 

The 2 bolt flange bearing I ordered is the wrong size. 

 

I'll get another one in a week or so and get back to chipping.
