Rob J. 1,942 #1 Posted September 27, 2023 I have this 854 and I’m doing a little maintenance on. I’m rebuilding the trans and fixing a leaky gas tank. I have everything apart and started cleaning the old gasket off. I was going to just red kote the tank but once I got it off the “do it right” in me kicked in and I split the tank. My question to the guys here that have a lot of experience in these two piece tanks is what’s the best method to seal it right? Do you just use the gasket? Or do you use the gasket and a liquid gasket as well? How about the sequence in which once you have the gasket(s) in place to place the screws back in what order? I appreciate any feedback. Gitty up!
ri702bill 8,326 #2 Posted September 28, 2023 Inside of tank looks clean! Guy on the 'Bay sells a new material water jet cut gasket that will work with ethanol gas. Already did two.....Comes with instructions and a recommendation for sealer..... Bill

moe1965 738 #4 Posted September 28, 2023 I I did a tank on my 854 about 4 years ago I got lucky and all the screws came out fine surprisingly I ran a bottoming tap in every hole installed a new gasket and staggered my re assembly of the screws back to what I thought was right going across from the one I just tightened. Don't squish the gasket and you should be fine.

Rob J. 1,942 #6 Posted September 28, 2023 Has anyone replaced the gasket and then once that was done Red-Kote the inside of tank?
Wild Bill 633 846 #7 Posted September 28, 2023 Dow DOWSIL 730S. Although very expensive.
dclarke 4,032 #8 Posted September 28, 2023 I used a new gasket, coated on both sides with Yamabond 4 gasket sealer. Make sure your mating surfaces are flat.
Racinbob 11,082 #9 Posted September 28, 2023 I think you were headed in the right direction right off the get go. Clean the tank. Once you have it clean, clean it again. Let it dry several days. Plug the bottom hole with a PVC plug just in case. Pour a little Red-Kote in (maybe 1/4 cup max, just enough to coat the bottom outside edge). Swirl the tank so it flows around the gasket seam. Go in both directions. Let it set up several more days. Prepare yourself to never have to worry about those pesky two piece tank leaks again. My only complaint is that they don't sell it in much smaller cans. I have a quart can and have done three two piece tanks and the can still looks full.
Darrenw85 608 #10 Posted September 28, 2023 I've seen a couple that had been welded, no future problems fixing that way.

I wasn’t successful on mine so ended up with a replacement one-piece from a 701.
