Mike,

Not sure about that. The wheel has to come off to fully remove the hood only thing is there is a roll pin in the wheel. I will let others chime in here. I have never owned this model as I usually stay away from tecky motors…🤷

Steve - the 603 and 604 models each had a diferent tall steering wheel - there was only a partial hoop on the 603, full circle on the 604. Download the manual.

Nice addition - it looks lonely by itself..........

604 came with the 2 spoke wheel. My dad bought one brand new. It's in my avatar.

This style wheel:

. Nice looking original. The steering wheel is an easy fix. The 604, 654, 704 and 854 all used the same steering wheel (4983}. It was used many other years and models as well so there's plenty of them out there. :)

Love the fact that you retained the Rolle Brothers dealer decal on the hood. They were my local dealer, and one of the brothers told me that at one time they were the largest Wheel Horse dealer on the east coast. I still have the phone number etched in my brain!

That picture was taken before I redid the hood. It had been painted before and the paint was coming off like a sheet and the hood was getting pretty rusty on the left upper corner. Decal had to go

We went thru 4 Teckys on our 604 from 64 to 77. Had a 1/4" bolt and nut holding the steering wheel on. I think the hood came off almost once a month! :helmet:

Which is why my Dad told the dealer he wanted a Kohler. We left with a 704 on the trailer that day. :)

Same here but the one on my 604 ran good too. Rings were shot but always started right up.

If it runs good..eh, who cares.
I kinda like that steering wheel. How’s the ergonomics? It looks like it’s taller than a stock wheel.

I'm not either but that one is so original and the tecky is running good. I love what you're doing to it. :)

Nice Find Steve !!!

Just a couple things noticed about original

Steering wheel not original as mentioned but certainly not a big deal. Seems like many of those were changed and probably from damage by trying to remove them for the hood removal. It's pretty simple to just lift the hood and twist it over to the side for complete access to everything under it without any need to remove the steering wheel but...

That one looks like the shaft was cut to get it off and the raised wheel got the height back plus a little. The one Jim posted has a different one on it too.

Engine is not original as a 604 would be a pull start only engine without any provisions for any of the electric start stuff. All the other electric stuff on the tractor would've been added too. Or possibly it's a 654 with the belt guard changed. They were the same exact tractor except for the electric start stuff. Battery tray would've been a little toolbox.

Didn't they stop driving tractors there at Kent? Did you still have to push it 1/2 mile to get it back to the truck?

That was a cool show but once I heard they stopped allowing driving of tractors it's out of the question. Parking a 1/4 mile away and walking up that hill just to get there and then dragging stuff all the way back doesn't seem like a good time.

I drove our 604 a whole summer with hood off. I was wearing out the threads for the knurled knobs taking the hood off every 15 minutes to get a lawn mowed!  :banana-wrench: :tools-wrench:  :tools-hammer: :tools-hammer:

:ROTF:Yeah, once you get a bad taste in your mouth about anything it's hard to keep taking bites huh?

My father bought a pull start only teccy tractor last year and mistakenly took that engine apart too far. ***** around with the timing and carb afterwards got him no where except aggravated and super tired from yanking that thing. His blood pressure raises just by mentioning the word Tecumseh. LoL

Swapped that teccy out pretty quick on my 654 with a K181. Steering wheel was never removed on the tractor and it's still mother nature brown welded on there.
