Identification

Bought this little guy the other day and was wondering if somebody could tell me what model it is. Trying to get it put back pretty original for my Grandpa. He will have a blast driving it through the towns parades.

Looks like a 60-61 Suburban (400, 500, or 401), but it's missing some things and the hood has been cut quite a bit. Fenders are mounted backwards as well.

I was putting it back together earlier and the wife decided to drop a bombshell that were pregnant again. So I was rushing to get it put back together and get it in the garage so we could celebrate.

Like state above you have a 60 or 61 Suburban. Looks like its had a bit of customizing. Here are a few pics of my 1961 401 Suburban for reference.

 

After I put the lift assembly back on.

 

With the customizing that has been done on your tractor, I might just roll with what you have.

     The others have you covered, all I'll add is make sure it's mechanically sound, and looks decent.  As long as runs well and is safe to drive, enjoy it as it is.

Thanks for the pictures so I have something complete to compare it to. Im not looking to restore it but just have it look pretty nice. I can see now thay I have some tiny wheels compared to what it should have. And I believe I could make some Foot jegs to look like those. Could you tell me what motor origionally came on these? Kohler K91 in the 1960 400 & 1961 401.

Did some looking around online and my lord people are proud of those engines. I dont really want to put a predator on this thing so I may just put one of my flatheads on it.

Nothing wrong with a Predator. I also happen to have a 1960 Suburban 400 with a 6.5hp Predator in it. Did a little work to the engine & now it's pushing about 8.5hp at 3600RPMs. Fun little tractor, had to make a set of wheelie bars to keep it from flipping over backwards when you grab a hand full of throttle.

Thats cool buddy. Im into flatkart racing and clone style motors are all we run. Thats why Id like to throw one of my flatties on it to change it up alittle.

Just an FYI. As you get familiar with that tractor be abused these are not synchronized transmissions. The transmission pulley needs to stop turning before you can shift. Wheel shouted used their belt guards to funnel slack belt around the engine drive pulley when you stepped on the clutch. The clutch really controls the idler pulley position. Your clone motor will need some belt guides to work with the transmission.

It came with an old briggs 206 that has the belt pulley on the shaft. It didnt come with the belt guard, I am going to have to make one of those.

I had to make a belt guard to work with the Predator engine on mine. Also added a belt brake on top of the tension pully to help stop the belt. Then the new guard went through a rusting process so that it would match the rest of the tractor.

Ahh I remember that Dan... wasn't for that and I got your original pulley we'd never met and got married... ... course we also wouldn't be so tractor heavy...

Can someone explain to me the position of the lever and their coresponding gears. Im alittle confused. It seems that this is a T pattern if you will but I would like some explanation. Thanks!
